The counties of Sligo and Donegal have always been a popular choice as a location for holiday accommodation in Western Ireland. A self-catering cottage would be an ideal base from which to explore the Donegal coastline. Leitrim and especially Carrick-on–Shannon are a Mecca for anglers who come to enjoy the lake and river fishing here.
Leitrim:
Lough Bran is sixty acres of easy fishing and is one of forty-odd lakes locally. Small wonder, then that this region is known as something of an anglers’ paradise. An equestrian centre offers a break from fishing and Carrick’s nightlife is warm and friendly.
Sligo:
The town streets and lanes are a mass of tightly packed shops and pubs. Find a bench and relax as the people pass you by. Escape to the quiet countryside and contemplate the scene of pretty Connemara ponies of the view of Lough Arrow.
Donnegal:
Sometimes known as the cradle of folk music (think of Clannad and Enya), Donnegal is also known for its national parks, like Glenveagh. If you find the view of Lough Melvin too placid you are only half an hour from the Atlantic at Bundoran.
