The barns were part of a historic farming estate and are surrounded by the protected lands of Walsingham Priory. For many years home only to swallows, the barns have now been brought back to life by an architect and his wife who have created elegant retreats that marry the best of traditional Norfolk materials with contemporary design.

Converted from the massive 19th century granary, The Great East Barn faces south and east towards an unbridged ford on the river and the gentle rise to Barsham Hill. Only five miles away is the unspoilt North Norfolk coast with its various beaches, from sandy to shingle: Wells-next-the-Sea with its huts and lagoons; the sophisticated Georgian town of Burnham Market for fashion and interiors, as well as two very good restaurants; if you don’t already know how, you can learn to sail and windsurf at Brancaster or Morston; there are seals at Blakeney Point, great bird watching at Cley and endless walks on the famous Holkham beach. Walsingham is also home to the world’s longest narrow gauge steam railway, which in the summer takes twenty minutes to reach Wells-next-the-Sea. Besides the outstanding National Trust properties at Blickling and Felbrigg, there are Pensthorpe, Houghton Hall, Holkham and Sandringham and their gardens to be explored. Four miles away is the busy market town of Fakenham that retains its weekly auction and produce market, a farmers’ market on the last Saturday of the month and a racecourse which holds regular meets.

Rental Notes: Welcome hamper on arrival including milk, bread, cereal, wine, biscuits, fruit, cheese, butter and juice. Minimum rental during July/August if for 7 nights, Friday-Friday. Minimum Christmas rental is 7 nights. 5 days minimum at New Year and Easter. Short breaks available (min 3 nights) at all other times. Mid-week, off season discounts. Please ask for details. Christmas/New Year barn will be fully decorated. Rental includes bedlinen, towels, toiletries. Logs and kindling provided.
