Local activities in and around Ales, Languedoc-Roussillon
Whilst you can swim or fish from the Chateau itself and you may spend choose to spend much of your holiday relaxing in the sun, if you want to see more of the area there are lots of places to visit. Days out might include a trip to the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct designated a site of international importance and featured on the French five euro note. Why not hire a kayak and see this famous monument from the river as you glide beneath it. Kayaking is more challenging along the Gorge de l'Ardeche (1hr) and the scenery is breathtaking. Visit the city of Nimes by car, or by train from our nearby station, to walk though the Water Gardens and admire the Roman amphitheatre. You may want to have lunch in one of the city's attractive restaurants but leave time to browse in the shops and boutiques. Avignon is another possibility for history lovers.
Kids willl love the Haribo museum, following the trail of these famous sweets from the very first strawberry bonbons originally made 150 years ago, to modern day sweet manufacture- the shop is also not to be missed. Or take the steam train from Anduze to the pretty town of St Jean du Gard - a trip of 13 km through the heart of the Cevennes. Stop off at the Bambouserie on the way. This 'corner of the Orient in the Cevennes' is unique in Europe and houses a fantastic collection of giant bamboo. All the family will enjoy a drive through the mountains to the historic town of Florac where you wander through stone passages and cobbled squares before heading back along the Corniche des Cevennes with its breathtaking views. The Gorge du Tarn (as impressive as the Grand Canyon according to american vistors!) is just over an hour as is Mont Lozere offering spectacular views across southern France. Hire a donkey and walk in RL Stevenson's footsteps. There are also caves, chateaux and museums to visit, wonderfully clear rivers to swim in and and of course we're just an hour's drive from the Mediterranean. Look out for the flamingos!
