Le Rouquet is in the old part of Castelnaud la Chapelle. The picturesque village runs down the hillside from the medieval castle to the River Dordogne and the property lies midway between the two. It is built in the local style of honey coloured stone, has a sunny South facing aspect and wonderful views across the valley from the windows and the terrace. Le Rouquet has been newly renovated to form two independant holiday gites which can be rented separately or together at a discount.
The large modern kitchen with dining area and log
The beamed twin bedroom
The view from the balcony as you have breakfast!
Sunny living room with sofa bed overlooking valley
The house was built over 200 years ago with the local honey coloured stone and inside retains many of the old features including stone walls and beams. The outside walls are covered with roses, vines and climbing plants.
The apartment has been recently refurbished to a very high standard and is light and airy sleeping up to 4 people in comfort. It has a large modern bright fully fitted kitchen and has a log stove making spring and autumn holidays a delight. You can eat in the kitchen but on warm sunny days you will probably choose to eat outside on the sunny balcony which overlooks the valley and church below. This is extremely convenient as the balcony is directly outside the kitchen and there is a barbeque here for your use.
Stairs from the kitchen lead upto the pretty bedroom which has twin beds and is heavily beamed with polished chestnut flooring.
From the kitchen a few steps lead down to the sitting room which is beamed and has lovely stone features with views across the valley.
It is possible to drive up the narrow lane to the house to unload luggage etc. but it is not possible to park the car outside the house. However there are several parking areas a few hundred metres away.
From the time you arrive at Le Rouquet there is no need to use your car unless you wish as Castelnaud has all that you need. There is an excellent baker, a wonderful butcher (that also sells cold meats and some ready prepared dishes), a small general store and post office (with ATM machine) as well as an excellent restaurant and other eating places.
There is excellent river bathing in the village and canoe trips can be organised from the office on the river bank. The walking in the wooded hills behind the village along the marked trails is delightful and makes a restful alternative if you have had your fill of the other wonderful sites in the area.

Local activities in and around Sarlat-la-Caneda, Aquitaine/Dordogne
Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty medieval villages and castles to explore. Nearby Sarlat,La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding examples of villages with beautiful medieval architecture and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include the colourful markets selling local produce, formal gardens and the many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings.
No visit is complete without a canoe trip down the river which can be arranged from Castelnaud (you can choose how far you want to be taken upriver and then it is an easy paddle with the river doing most of the work and the chance to take a break at one of the riverside rest stops for refreshment and a swim).
There are also many well marked walks through the wooded countryside around Castelnaud for the more energetic. On a hot day why not walk down to the river and enjoy a picnic on the grassy bank in the shade of the trees and cool off with a swim.
Our favourites places to visit are:-
Sarlat
The Saturday market at Sarlat with its hustle and bustle and local gourmet specialities (the architecture of the old town is exceptional with many alleyways and cafes in secluded spots);
The garden at Marqueyssac with its unique style of topiary and marvellous views over the Dordogne valley and across to Castelnaud - we like to walk there from Le Rouquet to give the car a rest;
