About Stow-on-the-Wold and its heritage
In 1476 King Edward IV gave Stow the right to hold two fairs; on the 12th May and the 24th October each year, and Stow Fair was for centuries one of the biggest livestock markets in Britain.
Daniel Defoe visited the town years before writing Robinson Crusoe; he recorded that 20,000 sheep were sold at the fair. Stow Fair later became better known as a horse fair, but due to disagreements over revenues the official fair was moved to Andoversford. However, there are still two Gypsy horse fairs held on the Thursdays nearest the original dates, which take place in fields between Stow and the nearby village of Maugesbury.
The 'Tures' or ancient narrow alleyways leading into Market Square were used for driving sheep in to market. The Market Cross dates from the Middle Ages, although the lantern head was restored in the late 1800's. St. Edward's Hall in the Square was built in 1878, and contains paintings of notable figures of the Civil War.

The city of Bath
Bath is a spectacularly beautiful city which stands on the River Avon among the hills of England’s West Country. The city’s compactness and striking architecture - Roman baths and sweeping Georgian terraces - combine to produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe. The ancient Celts, who first inhabited this area, believed that Bath’s hot springs were sacred, but it was the Romans who built the temple and the famous baths - now restored to their original grandeur.
In the early eighteenth century, under the direction of the socialite, Beau Nash, Bath became England’s premier spa town, where the rich and celebrated members of fashionable society gathered to ‘take the waters’ and enjoy its theatres and concert rooms. During this period the renowned architect, John Wood, laid the foundations for a new Georgian city to be built using the honey-coloured stone that gives Bath its mellow and indefinable quality.
However, Bath is far from a fossilised museum piece.
Oxford
Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years.
Nowadays, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town. Still with its ancient University, but home also to a growing hi-tech community. Many businesses are located in and around the town, whether on one of the Science and Business Parks or within one of a number of residential areas.
With its mix of ancient and modern, there is plenty for both the tourist and resident to do. Whether its visiting one of the many historic buildings, colleges or museums, going out for a drink or a meal, taking in a show or shopping till you drop, Oxford has it all and OxfordCity.co.uk will help you find it
