Casa la Regadera - Traditional village house full of character
House with 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5
A traditional 3 storey house situated in Valor, one of the prettiest villages in the Alpujarras, on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, and within easy reach of Almeria and Granada airports.
Situated in a friendly yet peaceful barrio, the house is less than 5 minutes walk from the nearest bar and shop. Wherever you are in the village, it's a downhill walk back home - a definite bonus on a hot day or after an evening out! There is vehicle access, with parking usually available right outside the front door. The previous owner ran a bar on the ground floor, called La Regadera (Watering Can) and the house is comfortably furnished in a rustic style, with many original features. Like many village houses, it is fairly 'open-plan', which gives it a spacious, light and airy feel. The house can sleep as many as 7 (very friendly!) people, but is ideal for 2 - 4.
Valor is a perfect location for hill walking, painting, photography, birdwatching, astronomy .... or just relaxing!
Roof terrace with Sierra de Gador in distance
Former bar, now lounge, with wood burning fireplace
The ground floor (the former bar) makes a comfortable, cool and spacious lounge, with plenty of seating. There's a double sofa bed, which makes it an ideal 'retreat' on hot summer nights, or for an afternoon siesta. With a wood-burning fireplace, (still in working order although we provide electric radiators for the winter) it's a great place to relax, or to entertain friends. The original bar area remains, complete with sink and bar stools!
A tiled staircase leads to the middle floor, with a small but well equipped kitchen (gas cooker with oven, microwave, fridge freezer, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, electric slow cooker, etc), a dining/living area (with TV, DVD player and hi-fi), large bathroom (with bath, shower, toilet and brand new (August 07)washing machine), a small but very quaint double bedroom (this is best described as an alcove, and the bed fills the width of the room - you'll find it very cosy if you're used to sailing or carvanning!) and a second toilet .
A fairly steep wooden staircase (with handrail) leads to the top floor, with a large open-plan bedroom with twin beds (screened off by a curtain) and ceiling fan, plus a folding bed. There is plenty of space for dressing, ironing (as if you would!) or clothes drying. There's also a new (June 2006) en-suite with shower, washbasin and WC. A door leads out onto the terrace, which has a dining table and chairs, sun loungers and a brushwood canopy for shade. There are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, and it's a great place for eating, relaxing or just watching the sun go down over the mountains.
If you would like some more information about the house or surrounding area, to help you decide if you'd like to stay in La Regadera, please contact us. We've put together an information pack that we would be happy to post or email to you.

Local activities in and around Valor, Granada/Costa Tropical
La Alpujarra is an enchanting area, lying between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean. The landscape is dotted with whitewashed villages offering a glimpse of rural life that has changed little even with the advent of tourism.
Much of the Alpujarra lies within the National Park of the Sierra Nevada, and has a wealth of wildlife and more indigenous wildflowers than any other European region. The area is excellent for both winter and summer activities such as walking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, trekking and horseriding. Renowned for the purity of its air and great sunshine record, the area is a popular retreat for Spanish families. Many books have been written about the area over the years, including 'South from Granada' by Gerald Brenan, and 'Driving Over Lemons' and 'Parrot in the Pepper Tree' by Chris Stewart.
Valor itself is a very pretty, peaceful village of some 1000 inhabitants, situated at 900 metres above sea level. There is a beautiful church. a good range of bars and restaurants, several shops plus a great village pool with fabulous mountain views. It was the birthplace of Aben Humeya, famous for leading the Morisco uprising against the Christians in 1569, and defeating 800 men. This event is celebrated every September, in the form of a 3 day fiesta, the highlight of which is a mock Christians versus Moriscos battle fought in the church square.
Most things you need can be easily obtained in the village shops or from the mobile delivery vans. The bars serve free tapas with alcoholic drinks, so 2 or 3 beers can result in a very cheap and varied lunch.
It is very easy to spend whole days (if not weeks!) just pottering around the village. However, there are plenty of places within easy reach for day trips -Granada, Almeria, Guadix, Tabernas, Cabo de Gata etc. For walkers, there are 3 marked walks from the village (which is on the GR7), plus lots of possibilities for longer treks, including ascents of Spain's highest peaks.

Tourism in Alpujarra
Official tourist board website, in Spanish, but with lots of information and some nice photos of the village
The Alhambra Palace is one of those places everyone should visit. It's just breathtaking! Granada has lots of other things to see and do - if you fly into Granada, why not spend a couple of days there before or after your holiday in Valor? This site is packed with information about the city, and it's in English.
One of the Mediterranean's most beautiful and unspoilt coastal areas, the Cabo de Gata Natural Park is within easy reach for a day trip. Or stop overnight in one of the pretty fishing villages. This site gives you a 'flavour' but just do a Google search for more information.
Full directions can be posted or emailed on request, and will of course be provided to all guests in advance, together with a 'Welcome Pack' explaining more about the house and area.

Rental Notes: We bought the house because we fell in love with it and hope to spend a lot more time there in the future. For now, we need to keep working in order to pay for it, and want it to be lived in as much as possible.
Since we see it as our home, it is probably furnished differently from most 'holiday cottages', and you are very welcome to make use of everything. If something runs out it would be nice if you could replace it, but don't worry if you don't have chance.
Accidents happen, so if something gets broken or damaged don't worry. If it's crockery, glasses etc, it would help if you could just buy some new ones. If it's something larger like the TV just let us know so we can get it fixed.
The house is looked after for us by Sylvi Cooper, who lives a few minutes away, and is on hand to offer help and advice if you should need it.
Rental price includes electricity and gas, bed linen and towels.
Changeover day flexible, so you can take advantage of low cost flights.
