La Cuadra - Traditional stone house in charming hamlet
House with 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6
DISCOUNT GIVEN FOR SINGLE OR DOUBLE OCCUPANY
La Cuadra is an three-story Asturian stone house which is over 150 years old. Situated in a cosy hamlet, it has recently been fully-restored yet still retains it's traditional character. At La Cuadra you can enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the Asturian countryside either relaxing on the terrace or by trying one of the idyllic walks which start directly from the house. La Cuadra is located in the centre of Asturias making it ideal for those who wish to explore the whole region as well as those who simply want to unwind or just explore the local area, which includes the magnificent Redes National Park.
The house, a ten-minute drive away from the town of Pola de Laviana, is surrounded by orchards and fields where you can often see animals including lambs, foals and calves. Enjoy blossom and wild flowers in spring, traditional hay-making with scythes in summer, apple harvesting for cider in autumn and snow-covered peaks in winter.
On the ground floor there is the kitchen, dining area with wood-burning fire and bathroom with a large shower and the washing machine.
On the first floor are the bedrooms. Two with double beds and the third with full-size bunkbeds.
On the third floor is a spacious 45m2 lounge with french windows which give onto the larger balcony. It's an ideal room for relaxing in the evening and on those lazier days when you wish to stay in. The lounge is equipped with a tv and DVD/CD player, toys and games and a selection of books, DVDs. There's also a small dining area in the lounge and on the balcony.
Outside, there is a large terrace with views of the Peña Mayor mountain and the lush green hillsides around the hamlet.
The Area:
In the nearby village, a five minute drive/half-hour walk away, you'll find a village shop and a bar serving good, reasonably priced, food. A ten-minute drive will bring you to Pola de Laviana which has numerous supermarkets, bars, restaurants, banks, etc as well as a large weekly market, plus a train station with trains running to Gijón and Oviedo.
A 20-minute drive up the valley will bring you to the Redes National park. The park is comprised of over 370 square kilometres of beautiful landscapes: High peaks, and rolling green hillsides meet mountain meadows, forests, gorges and crystal clear rivers. Many small villages dot the park and exploring them is almost like stepping back in time. We love exploring Redes and spend a lot of our free time walking there. As well as exploring the park on foot you can also hire bikes or go pony treking.
Closer to La Cuadra, there is excellent walking on the Pena Mayor mountain; the ridge gives fabulous views of the mountains in Redes, the Nalon valley, and on a clear day, Oviedo and the coast at Gijon. The start of the offical walk is a 10 minute drive up the hill from La Cuadra, or you can walk straight from the house. There are numerous country walks leaving straight from the village too.

Local activities in and around Oviedo, North West
As well as the previously-mentionned Redes National Park with its superb walking and wood-working museum/workshop (where you can see traditional Asturian clogs being made) you'll find many other things to do. For example:
The region's cider museum is found in Nava, a 30-minute drive from the house, which is in the main cider-producing area of Asturias.
Further down the Nalón valley, in El Entrego, you'll find the Asturian Mining Museum. It's orientated very much towards the visual and you can even descend a recreated mine shaft for tour with an ex-miner as a guide.
The three main cities of Asturias are an easy drive from the house: the regional capital Oviedo, the coastal city Gijón and the quieter Avilés. It’s also possible to travel to León, the Picos de Europa, the Quiros and Somiedo parks.
Near Trubia is the the Senda del Oso, a 20km walking and cycling route (bikes can be hired) which is famous in the area for the two orphaned bears - Paca and Tola - who were rescued and now live in a large enclosure in their natural habitat which runs parallel to the route. There's a viewpoint along the walk where you can see the bears being fed - it's a great experience and a must for children and adults alike!
The stunning Asturian coast, the Costa Verde, is about 45 minutes away, You can choose between large surf beaches or smaller secluded coves. There are numerous fishing villages along the coast serving tasty, fresh seafood. Also, the Jurasic Museum at Colunga is a big hit with all children who like dinosaurs.
Art lovers shouldn't miss a visit to the Oviedo Gallery (free entry) which contans works by Dali, Picasso, Miro and Goya, amongst others; or the superb Evaristo Valle (respected Asturian artist) museum and gardens (containing sculpture), near Gijon.
When to visit:
Asturias is beautiful all year round. What’s more it can be warm and sunny at any time of year. We’ve sat on the terrace in January in t-shirts and had lunch in full sunshine.
When To Come - Spring
Spring brings meadows full of wild flowers and also the traditional Asturian ‘Espichas’; these are small cider festivals celebrating the opening of new barrels of cider and take place in bars, town squares and open fields throughout the region from late March through to June. A range of tapas is served with the cider and the atmosphere is festive.
Summer
We normally have some suitable beach weather from late spring until mid/end September. Summer is a good time to observe traditional hay making in the countryside. Scythes are the still used for cutting the grass – watching farmers make hay is almost like being transported back to a different era. Summer is also the time for fiestas when the locals take time off work to let their hair down. Each town and village will host its own fiesta which normally takes place over 2-5 days. The main fiesta in Oviedo, ‘San Mateo’, takes place in September when there’s a whole week of festivities.
Autumn
September and October are generally fine months with the leaves starting to turn around mid-October. In autumn orchards are laden with apples, mostly destined for small-scale cider production. Local food fiestas in the Nalón valley take place in November. Blimea has its own ‘stuffed pepper’ fiesta. Further down the valley El Entrego hosts a famous ‘stuffed onion’ festival which attracts food lovers from across the region.
Winter
Winter can be bright and sunny and brings snow to the mountains. The views from the house on a clear day, with snow-covered peaks, are quite stunning, especially when you can then enjoy a roaring fire inside.
Fine Art Museum, Oviedo
An excellent museum with works by Picasso and Goya as well as Asturian artists. Entry is free.
A wonderful place to visit - a museum based in the painter's stupendous residence on the edge of Gijon with sculptures by other artists in the surrounding gardens.
Asturias is an ideal spot for birdlovers. Previous guest have seen numerous species just in the local area and in the Redes Park including the golden oriol, griffon and Egyptian vulture, golden, short-toed and booted eagle, kite, buzzard, kestrel, owl, woodpeckers, shrike, cetti's warbler, serin, firecrest, yellowhammer, cough and Alpine chough, red-backed shrike, redstart and belack redstart, roch thrush, crag martin and zitting cisticola.
The Pena Mayor is ideal for seeing numerous birds of prey at short-distance. On the other side of the Redes park, as is Villaviciosa Esturary. There is also a hide on Rioseco reservoir, less than half an hour from the house.
