Gilar House - Stone Farmhouse in the heart of North Wales
Cottage with 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 9, Garden
Gilar is set in the heart of North Wales, within a couple of miles of Snowdonia National Park. The truly historic, outstanding stone Grade II* Listed Farmhouse was built c.1600 AD as the seat of the High Sheriff of Denbighshire.
The Gatehouse, added in 1623, is one of very few such remaining in Wales. Both buildings retain many original features including exposed oak beams, large fireplaces and oak panelled walls. Although no longer used as the entrance, the Gatehouse still houses the original gate and is about 35 yards to the front of the main house.
Welsh farmhouses of this period were often built in two halves to house two generations of farming families. The other half of Gilar House is home to a couple who have farmed actively since 1965 and are a blessing to have next door – there is no crisis they cannot deal with!

A dining room with stunning oak table big enough for 10, plate warmers and huge (non-working) fireplace. At the end of the hall is a small, but very well equipped, modern fitted kitchen with dishwasher, double oven, microwave, fridge and freezer. There is cutlery and crockery for ten place settings and drawers and cupboards offer a wide range of modern utensils. The stairs are one of the more ‘quirky’ features. They are quite steep and in places. The owners have taken precaution by reinforcing banisters, handrails and fitting appropriate carpets, guests should take care using the stairs and small children should be accompanied.
First floor: Spacious, panelled master bedroom with super king size (7 ft.) oak four poster bed with exposed beams. Main twin bedded room with original floorboards and rugs. Cosy single bedroom. Upstairs full bathroom. More stairs lead to second floor twin bedroom with sloping ceiling. Behind the house is a ‘washhouse’ containing washing machine and tumble dryer
The Gatehouse room is reached by outside stone steps. It is attractively furnished with a double sofabed, tables, lamps and a chest. To accommodate a party of nine at Gilar linen will be supplied for the bed. For parties of seven or fewer, the room will be set up for use as a day room for anyone wanting a little peace and quiet, reading room or games. The main window faces the large walled garden to the front of Gilar House and the view from the top of the steps, over the farm is lovely
Gilar House has central heating and the Gatehouse can be warmed by an electric oil-filled radiator. Large garden, tables, benches, chairs & ‘oil barrel’ barbecue. Kennel. Gilar is a working farm and occasionally the yard may contain sheep or cattle

Gilar offers pretty walks and cycle rides. The landscape and views of Snowdonia are spectacular. Two small lakes make a lovely picnic spot and are stocked with trout - perfect for an evening’s peaceful fly-fishing with wonderful views or as a place to teach a child to fish. There is no charge for fishing for guests but you need to be in possession of a Fishing Permit. The area offers sea trout, grayling, rainbow, wild brown trout and salmon fishing.
The Conwy Valley Railway, part of the National Rail Network departs from Llandudno and passes through beautiful Welsh countryside until it reaches Blaenau Ffestiniog. Along the way you see Conwy Castle, Gethin’s Viaduct, Dolwyddelan Castle and the peaks of Snowdonia before entering the heart of the mountain to emerge minutes later in the imposing landscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the centre of Wales’ mining industry.
The Conwy Valley Railway Museum includes a working model railway layout and a steam-hauled miniature railway in the grounds and self-drive mini dodgems, Postman Pat, school bus and Toby Tram for children. The Garden at Bodnant is one of the finest in the world. It is in two parts: The Terrace Garden around the house and the Pinetum, and wild garden. The garden is owned by the National Trust and is managed by Lord Aberconway and Martin Puddle
Llechwedd Slate Caverns have rides which go into the slate mines of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Visitors experience the conditions of Victorian miners. The Deep Mine offers an alternative view of slate mining – an engineered vehicle carries passengers down a 30 degree underground incline into the lower depths of the mine.
The Great Orme Copper Mine is one of the UK’s most important archaeological sites and is the largest Bronze Age mine in the world. The tour visits the underground labyrinth of tunnels which were part of a vast industrial complex 4,000 years ago. A highlight is the Great Cavern which was excavated 3,500 years ago by miners using stone and bone tools.
