This area is steeped in history from the earliest times. It is not for nothing that there are two World Heritage sites in Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi and the stunning mediaeval Cite de Carcassonne with its turrets and towers, a sight not to be missed.
Or visit Lastours, with its ruined castles, perched high on a series of rocky pinnacles, just a few minutes away by car, where gold has been mined since Roman times. Perhaps visit Rennes les Chateaux of "Da Vinci Code" fame.
However, for those who like the outdoors, the natural beauty of this area makes it a walker's paradise. There are an abundance of beautiful walks, many with views to the Pyrenees. The walking is suitable for all levels, from those who enjoy a quiet stroll with the family along the banks of the Canal du Midi, to the challenging Route des Cathars.

Near Carcassonne you will find the Lac de la Cavayere. There are 3 beaches, pedalos, crazy golf, and a snack bar/ice-creams
The village is in the Cabardes wine region but within 15 miles are found the Minervois, Fitou, Corbieres and other wine growing areas; Rivesaltes, Limoux and Malepere being not much further.
