Local activities in and around Skibbereen, South West
Situated only one hour from Cork airport this means that Cork city, Fota Wildlife Park, Kinsale, Blarney Castle, Gougane Barra, Killarney, Bantry, Crookhaven and so many other outstanding destinations are all easily within driving distance.
The famous picture postcard village of Glandore is just a 'stones throw' across the water or a 'hop, skip and jump' across a long narrow bridge. There is delicious home cooked food available in Hayes bar which truly has to have one of the most spectacular views in West Cork. The thriving historic town of Skibbereen is only five miles away and if shopping is in order don't miss Clonakilty. This bustling market town is teeming with the unique crafts produced locally by a cosmopolitan selection of the residents of West Cork.
However for those who seek peace and tranquillity, few places offer such an air of serenity as this stretch of coastline and wooded parklands. A trip to Sherkin Island off Baltimore is a must. There are cliffs, sandy beaches and magnificent views of the coast - definately worth a visit.
Sailing courses are available in both Baltimore and Glandore during the summer months. Children are welcome in all the pubs in the village particularly those serving food. For those who hope to enjoy good food on holidays West Cork is a superb location. If one cooks in, the most wonderful locally produced meat and vegetables are available not to mention the delicious sea food.
Eating out in the area offers a wealth of variety. In Union Hall itself there are two pubs offering casual pub food. For some of the best 'pub grub' in the country head over to Castletownsend to Maryanns who undoubtedly provides extremely delicious seafood. In nearby Rosscarbery there is a seafood and steak restaurant definitely worth a visit and the forty minute journey to Baltimore is more than justified by a visit to the excellent seafood restaurant 'The Custom House' - great food and good value - reservations recommended.
From Cork, follow signs to West Cork to the N71. Passing several towns will bring you to Rosscarbery. Pass through Rosscarbery, not long after will be a left turn to Union Hall.
