Le Moulin Bodin is a former watermill nestling on the banks of the river Lay in the South Vendee countryside.
In a secluded setting at the end of a country lane, the detached guest cottage is an ideal romantic retreat for a couple, but can accommodate up to four people. There is a private terrace with barbecue, swimming pool shared with the owners, rowing boats on the river, and five acres of grounds to enjoy, including a young arboretum with over 250 species of trees.
The property is rural but not remote, being only 2 miles from the small town of Mareuil sur Lay and 8 from Lucon which has a good range of shops and restaurants, as well as a very impressive Cathedral.
Both La Rochelle and the Puy du Fou are within an hour’s drive, and the beautiful, sandy Atlantic beaches are just half an hour away.
The guest cottage has recently been renovated in traditional style, retaining all its character with exposed oak beams and terracotta tiles throughout. Modern touches have been added, such as underfloor heating, a fully functional corner kitchen and a new shower room.
The 6m x 6m oak-beamed living room has a magnificent fireplace with wood burning stove, dining table for 6, sofa bed and armchairs, as well as the corner kitchen with gas hob, one and a half bowl sink, multi-function microwave and built-in dishwasher and fridge.
The bedroom has a king size bed (which can be unzipped to make 2 singles) and there is also a double sofa bed in the living room. Between the bedroom and shower room is a small room with a window overlooking the terrace which can accommodate two small children as well as the washing machine!
The shower room has an open shower, wc and basin.
The view to the front looks over the mill race and weir towards the river and island; the living room back door gives on to a south west facing terrace with barbecue and garden furniture.
The bedroom has a window overlooking the river, and a farmhouse door with window facing across the drive to the owners' converted Mill House. There is also a large covered area housing bikes and table tennis.
Guests are welcome to use the 14mx7m swimming pool from May to September.

The Vendee is a very popular holiday and second home destination for French and English alike. It has a lovely climate, with the 2nd highest average sunshine hours in France, beaten only by the Cote d'Azur. At the coast (a 30 minute drive away), there are beautiful long sandy beaches as well as the famous sailing port of Les Sables d'Olonne, and inland there are miles of unspoilt farming land among gently rolling hills.
Mareuil-sur-Lay (2 miles) has a supermarket, a good selection of small shops and several restaurants and bars. Lucon, 8 miles south, has a wider range of shops, hypermarkets and restaurants, and La Roche sur Yon, 15 miles north, is the departmental capital.
The beautiful old port of La Rochelle, 50 minutes south, is always worth a visit, whether it be for a stroll down the stone collonnaded shopping streets, a leisurely lunch overlooking the port, or a visit to the aquarium. The amazing theme park of the Puy du Fou is 45 minutes east, and the Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice, is less than an hour away.
