Our cosy holiday cottage is situated in a peaceful forested valley 20 kms north of the central Portuguese town of Tomar. It was converted from a small barn in 2005 and contains a double bedroom, bathroom and a kitchen/living room with a sofa bed. It has all modern facilities and is ideal for 2/3 people, or a couple with 1or 2 children. The cottage is sited on our 7 acre farm, which is part of a hamlet called Hortas. Please note that the main farm house where we live also has guest accommodation in the converted wine store, or 'adega', which has one double and a single bed.

The Donkey House is on the edge of our small equestrian farm and has a private enclosed garden. Here there is a barbeque area and garden furniture for eating, relaxing & entertaining outside. The cottage is cool in the summer, but has central heating for those cooler evenings to make it warm and cosy inside.
Though The Donkey House is located in a rural hamlet, it is very accessible from the main N110, with the nearest village shops only 5 minutes drive away. It is therefore easy to travel by car to all sights and centres, though there is also an excellent train service to Lisbon, Porto & other cities.
Directly from the cottage however, it is possible to walk straight into the surrounding hills and forests, enjoying the quiet and beauty of the local scenery and wildlife.

1 Double Bedroom. There is also a sofa bed in the living room suitable for 1 adult or 2 small children. We also have a cot available for a child up to 3 years old.

Local activities in and around Alvaiazere, Costa de Prata
The small market town of Cabacos is 5 minutes drive away and there are many historic sites and excellent shopping areas within an hours drive. The ancient town of Tomar, 30 minutes away, hosts a 12th century Templar castle and a magnificent 16th century Convent of Christ. As well as being a fascinating historic site, Tomar is also a pleasant shopping area and has many restaurants and cafes.
The old university town of Coimbra has also great historical interest and is ideal for shopping and dining. Student life here has ensured this town is rich in cafes and bars, as is home to the famous Fado singing. Other nearby historical sights, include Fatima, which has the largest shrine in Western Europe and visited by thousands of pilgrims each year; also Conimbriga, which is the largest roman archaeological site in Portugal.
The surrounding area near the Donkey House is perfect for walking, cycling, horse riding, and the nearby river Zezere offers swimming & other water sports. The Atlantic coast with fabulous beaches is 1 1/4 hours away, perfect for sunbathing on the large sandy beaches, or for surfing and swimming.
We also have a small equestrian centre on our farm, and can offer the facility of lessons for riders from beginners upwards, or for people just wishing to ride out in the surrounding lanes and forests. A pony is also available for children to ride.
We are almost equal distance from Lisbon Airport and Porto airport, near the village of Cabacos, which is just off the N110, between Tomar in the south and Alvaiázere in the north.
