Villa Katafigio is a new luxury villa overlooking the traditional picturesque village of Plaka with. It is on a small private development of 5 houses and shares a large pool.
The villa sits in its own secure gardens, only a 5 minute drive from the Blue Flag beach at Almerida. The area is famous for walking and there are many routes both for experienced and less experienced. Plaka is only a 10 minute walk where there is a supermarket for your fresh bread and local wine. Plaka also boasts 3 recommended Tavernas and a cafeneon. Almerida a 5 minute drive away has plenty of tavernas, a couple of supermarkets, car and bike hire, windsurfing, safe golden sandy beach and money changing facilities.
Villa Katafigio (The Retreat) comfortably sleeps 6 and on the first floor has 2 large bedrooms (1 with Double Bed and 1 with Twin Beds), plus a double sofa bed in the lounge.
Each bedroom has comfortable beds with french doors leading onto the large balcony. AC is available in both bedrooms. Each bedroom has ample wardrobe space, mirror, chair, reading lights. There is also a cot and hairdryer.
On the first floor there is also a fully tiled Shower Room with large shower, WC and handbasin and washing machine.
On the ground floor the well fitted kitchen has a host of electrical appliances - full sized oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, coffee-maker, etc and crockery and cutlery for up to 6 persons. The dining area seats 4 comfortably. The lounge area has 2 sofas, a DVD player, TV, CD player, radio. There is a well-stocked bookcase with DVD's, CD's and games as well as an extensive guide book put together by the owner for your use.
From the lounge you can either go out to the large covered terrace area with archways and eat al fresco -table and 4 chairs, or out to the patio area to chatch the sun with a barbecue. Up a couple of steps is the fabulous 40 sq.m pool where you can laze all day on the sunloungers. The car park is behind the property. Villa Katafigio is reached by turning off the mountain road to Kambia, down a track and through an olive grove.

Local activities in and around Plaka, Crete
Plaka is one of the loveliest traditional villages in the Apokoronas area of Crete and is surrounded with village houses all growing olives, almonds, apples, lemons, oranges, as well as a wealth of colour in the hibiscus, bouganvillea and oleander. From springtime there is the pungent smell of the mountain herbs. Plaka has a supermarket, 3 traditional Cretan tavernas with wonderful food and a cafeneon.
Almerida - our local Blue Flag beach is literally a 5 minute drive away where there are watersports and a safe golden sandy beach. There is a supermarket, taxi rank, car and bike hire, moneychanging, internet cafe, postbox.
Kokkino Chorio - 5 minute drive further up the mountain famous for the filming of the Anthony Quinn film 'Zorba the Greek' and if you sit in the cafeneon long enough a local will engage you in conversation about the part he had in it!!
Kalives - the next beach is a lovely safe beach, with about 25 tavernas, 3 banks, hol-in-the-wall, internet cafe.
Aptera - A 15 minute drive away. The ruins are located on a hill above Souda Bay. It was founded in 7th century BC, one of the largest city states in Crete until an earthquake destroyed it in 7th century AD. You can see impressive Roman cisterns, a Greek temple, other buildings and massive defensive walls.
Chania - the cosmopolitan city is 20 km away. There is a fabulous old Venetian town as well as the harbour, plenty of museums, restaurants, bars and good shopping. The famous Venetian market building in the shape of a cross is worth a visit. In the narrow streets behind the harbour there are restaurants, bars and many shops selling local handicrafts, ceramics, jewellery and textiles.
The Apokoronas region of Crete is famous for it's walking both for experienced and less experienced. The White Mountains have snow on their peaks until June most years.
Samaria Gorge National Park
On the southern side of the Omalos plateau, the Samaria National Park was established to protect the endemic flora and fauna of this fascinating region that encompasses Europe's longest gorge and a number of smaller gorges.
Limnoupolis is a water city covering an area of almost 100 yards, lying on the emerald roots of the White Mountains. The visitor of the park has to choose in between various entertaining and educational games, water -based or not.
Approx time from Chania International Airport is 30 minutes. From Heraklion Airport (where cheaper flights are possible) transfer time is about one and a half hours. From the Souda Ferry - 20 minutes.
