Local activities in and around Loch Ness, Highlands & Islands
Urquhart Castle: The great Square tower of the castle, on its spur of rock, lapped by the waters of Loch Ness, dominates the landscape, as it must have dominated the lives of many people over the centuries. Archaeological excavations have shown that there was a fort here in prehistoric times. With an enormous visitor centre, you will be able to see a video giving an account of the history of the castle, and see various artifacts discovered at the site.
Loch Ness: Twenty-four miles long and a mile wide in places, it reaches a depth of some 700 feet. There is much more to Loch Ness than the monster, though the monster makes its presence felt. It is neither certainly there nor certainly not there, a feeling that anyone can empathise with who has spent even half an hour looking at that immense and ever changing surface of the water. The Loch Ness 2000 Visitor Centre is a four star visitor attraction and highly recommended.
Touring: Central for touring the beautiful Highlands, visiting Skye or distilleries on the Whisky Trail.
Climbing: For the ‘munro-baggers’ amongst you, there are more than 30 Munros within an hours drive.
Walking & Cycling: The Great Glen Way which runs through Fort Augustus, is a footpath of 70 miles across Scotland between Inverness in the east and Fort William in the west. There are may beautiful shorter walks and cycle routes in and around Fort Augustus for you to enjoy.
Golf: Visit the championship course at Nairn or walk to the local golf club in Fort Augustus. A discount is offered to our customers at the Loch Ness golf club, Inverness.
Ski-ing: A 30 minute drive away, the Aonach Mor Ski area has a chairlift going up 1200m, giving incredible views, with ski-ing & mountaining biking in summer.
On the Water: Fishing is available in the Loch and surrounding rivers, alternatively there are many boating operators on the Caledonian Canal. Try canoeing, or catch a boat at Fort Augustus to Inverness for a days shopping.
By rail Inverness has direct services from London King’s Cross, Edinburgh, Glasgow.
By air Inverness has direct flights from all major airports.
