Apartment in Bloomsbury, Central London - Georgian Townhouse in quiet, elegant part of town

Apartment with 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5

This spacious apartment occupies the top two floors of a Georgian house in Bloomsbury, a quiet, elegant corner of central London. Here you can be at the heart of London, but away from the crowds. Close to tube stations (Russell Square - 7 minute walk and Chancery Lane - 6 minutes), buses, restaurants, pubs/bars, shops and walking distance from many of London's finest attractions, this is an ideal holiday home for a family looking to explore London from a central base.

The British Museum is a 10 min walk and the Charles Dickens Museum housed in the building where he wrote Oliver Twist, is 1 minute away. London's West End with its fabulous shopping (Oxford St, Regent St), theatres, art galleries and landmarks (Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace) is close by. Buses to the West End are at the end of John Street and take 10 mins or you can walk in 25 minutes.

This was once a grand London house for a professional gentleman's family. You can stay in the top part of the house, sleeping where the servants would have slept, with a view of Telecom Tower and London's West End from your window. What would have been the gentleman's master bedroom is now your living room. Built in the 1790s, the building has been newly refurbished to a high standard and now boasts all the luxuries of a modern home, including a fully-equipped kitchen (washer/drier, dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer), satellite TV and DVD player, power shower and modern bathroom.

The large living room has two sofas, toys for young children, books and games. Large windows with original Georgian wooden shutters look out to the historic street below. The kitchen has a dining table and six chairs. Up the narrow stairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The large master bedroom has a king-size double bed, a single bed, antique chest of drawers, a mirror and wardrobe. The second bedroom has two single beds and a Victorian chest of drawers. A cot and highchair are available on request. Linen and towels included. A hairdryer, an iron and ironing board are provided.

Local activities in and around Central London, South East

If you have been to London before and seen the major sites (Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, London Eye etc), Bloomsbury can be very rewarding for some less well known but rather eccentric attractions. The John Soames Museum houses a 3,000 year old sarcophagus; the Foundling Museum shows paintings by Hogarth, Reynolds and Gainsborough in restored 18th century roooms. Of course Bloomsbury is known for its literary association with the early 20th century Bloomsbury set and it is a pleasant walk, through the area's garden squares over to Gordon Square where Virginia Woolf lived.

If you are looking for presents to take home, there are a good many small independent shops in Bloomsbury, try Lamb's Conduit Street for quirky gifts that you won't find in the big stores. If you are looking for big stores, it is a 10 minute bus journey to Oxford Street, home of London's great department stores (Selfridges, John Lewis and a huge Marks & Spencer) and Regent Street (Liberty, toy store Hamleys).

If you are planning a trip to the theatre, again, it is a ten minute bus ride to Leicester Square, Shaftesbury Avenue and the theatre district. Covent Garden with its street theatre, opera house and shopping Piazza is an easy walk. Heading East, you can stroll around the City of London, Europe's financial district with its famous buildings: St Paul's Cathedral, the Gherkin, Tower of London, the Monument to the Fire of London and Wren churches. To the South, the London Eye, Tate Modern art gallery and the South Bank cultural centre.

For eating out, there is a huge choice from the local pub to celebrity hangouts and as London is home to people from all over the world, there is food from every nation. There are some fine Victorian pubs in the area, check out The Lamb with its 'snob screens' and the Citee of Yorke on Holborn for its fine interior.
The nearest supermarket is Waitrose in the newly restored Brunswick Centre, which also houses five restaurants and a cinema.

  British Museum
Don't try to do it all in one day! There are 13 million objects in this great museum so pick a few sections that interest you - the Eygptian Mummies, the Elgin Marbles, gladiator's helmets in the Roman section - or take on online tour before you go.

  Foundling Museum
The Foundling Museum tells the story of the Foundling Hospital, London's first home for abandoned children and of three major figures in British history: its campaigning founder the philanthropist Thomas Coram, the artist William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel. This remarkable collection of art and social history is now housed in a restored and refurbished building adjacent to the original site of the Hospital, demolished in 1926.

  Sir John Soane Museum
Sir John Soane's life and work (1753-1837) are displayed in his own amazing house at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, now a museum. Don't go on a Saturday, there is often a queue.
