Chateau Ventenac sits majestically above the Canal du Midi, with panoramic views over the fields of the Minervois wine-growing region and to the hills of Corbieres and the Pyrenees beyond. There has been a chateau on this site for more than a thousand years.
The current house was built just over a hundred years ago and while it is equipped for all the luxuries of twenty-first century life the chateau and its beautiful grounds retains an elegant period charm. The English owners have recently restored part of this 19th century stone castle to create a comfortable family home which will comfortably accommodate 14 adults plus two children in 6 bedrooms with 5 bathrooms . This part of the Minervois wine growing area is close to fabulous beaches and is ideally situated for exploratory trips to the historic towns and villages of the Languedoc.

Château Ventenac self-catering accommodation details: Our beautiful Chateau is fully equipped for 14 (+2) people. The large traditional French kitchen has everything you might need including a starter pack of kitchen/bathroom supplies.
The dining hall has a refectory style dining table for 16. The drawing room provides a cool oasis with comfortable sofas and chairs. There is a second sitting room on the top floor with a TV/ video , DVD, and CD players. There is also wireless internet access. The first floor bedrooms are large with fabulous south facing views and ceiling fans and are all en suite. These rooms are beautifully and traditionally decorated with polished original oak parquet floors and spectacular fireplaces.
The accommodation is very flexible and extra single beds for children can easily be added. The rooms are fully equipped to make sure you have everything you need. Top floor bedrooms have original terracotta tiled floors and share two family bathrooms.
Outside there is a wisteria shaded balcony, a large terrace with tables, chairs and parasol, steps lead down to the beautiful gardens which are being lovingly restored to their former glory. There are many shady spaces with garden furniture and hammocks for relaxing and reading.
At the bottom of the garden is the pool (8 metres by 4 metres) with sun loungers, chairs and tables and a lovely shady pergola. Steps lead down to a private lockable wrought iron entrance gateway leading onto the Canal du Midi (and only 50yds from the Vente de Vin where the local wine costs 2 euros for a litre!).

Sadly the house is not suitable for the elderly or disabled. Children are welcome but it should be noted that there are a lot of steps & children will need to be supervised at all times.
Local activities in and around Narbonne, Languedoc-Roussillon
Ventenac is a delightfully peaceful and friendly village with just over 500 inhabitants, perfectly located for exploring the Languedoc region. In the village itself we have two restaurants (one of which is closed during the winter) offering a wide choice of menus and informal dining, as well as a mobile bakery which is open every morning. In nearby villages there are other restaurants, plus supermarkets, bakers, general stores, tabacs, cafés and bars.
The pure sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea are about 40 minutes’ drive away, with a choice of family resorts such as Narbonne Plage and Gruisson, with its unusual chalets supported on stilts. From the house you can see the hills of the Corbières range, with the Pyrenees behind them – a couple of hours away by car.
The famous medieval city of Carcassonne is 35km away, while the Cathar village of Minerve, which lends its name to our Minervois wine, is even closer. Our biggest local city is Narbonne, which was established as a regional capital by the Romans.
Nearby you can find ideal locations for walking, cycling, fishing, boating, horse riding, wind surfing, skiing in winter, wine tasting, and fine dining.
Best of all, getting to Ventenac is easy with a choice of airports offering budget flights, as well as high-speed TGV trains to Narbonne. We’re also well served by autoroutes.
Closest airports are Carcassonne (40 mins) and Perpignan (50 mins) High speed trains go to Narbonne (15 minutes away). Narbonne also has a Motorail terminal. We are about 15 minutes from autoroutes.
