Local activities in and around Vezenobres, Languedoc-Roussillon
With the sea, rivers, mountains and endless rolling countryside and consistent sunshine throughout the spring and summer months, the area like a playground for the outdoor enthusiast.
The towns and cities of historical significance in the area are Nimes, Uzès, Montpellier, Arles, and Avignon over the River Rhône in Provence or other delightful mediaeval towns Aigues Mortes, and St Guilhem-le-Desert. A whole day is required to visit the magnificent Pont du Gard.
There is a fascinating mix of parks and tours - within a few kms there are trips on a steam train, guided walks through bamboo forests, descents into mines and tours of aquariums. Visit the centres of 'Vasses Boisset d'Anduze' and St Quentin la Poterie or take a trip to the 'Musée des Vallees Cevenoles' , the 'Musée des Beaux Arts' or the 'Musée du Desert'.
The location is one of the most beautiful and interesting in France. Bordered by both the Med and the mountains - where hundreds of species of wildlife thrive in their natural habitat, and carpeted with acres of vineyards, sunflowers, lavender and natural scrubland.
Steeped in history, the region refuses to let go of it's traditions and with it's Catalan influence. Bullfighting is not uncommon especially during 'La Féria'. Many villages keep the tradition of honouring the bull and running the white horses of the Camargue through their streets in the summer season and the sport of water-jousting which goes back to the Middle Ages can still be witnessed Le Grau du Roi.
A visit to the region would not be complete without visiting one of the many markets where pallets of local produce are displayed in glorious multicolour with aromas to entice! A shortlist - Olives, Honey, 'Pelardon' (goat's cheese), Chestnuts, Truffles, Asparagus, Figs, Camargue Rice and Shellfish and dishes such as 'Boeuf à la Gardianne' and 'Brandade du Morue' will whet the appetite, whilst the Gard is part of the largest wine producing region in France.
