Right in the heart of Chianti Classico, this friendly old stone house, with an egg shaped swimming pool (12 X 6m.) is set on a series of natural rocky terraces, with low walls and flower filled gardens. Set amongst vineyards, olive groves, cypresses, forested hills with a castle across the valley; the house is hidden away down a rough track through woodlands only a few minutes from Vagliagli. Starting life as a 12th Century aristocratic hunting lodge, the house has twin open arches on each floor, topped by a dovecote. Two wings were added about three hundred years ago. The result is very pleasantly balanced, and one senses that the various transformations have been made with affection and a sense of proportion and respect for the building and the land. There are extensive fenced grounds and well tended gardens. Staff who tend the gardens, house and pool have access to the property for maintenance.

A big old mulberry tree frames the twin, open arches which front the entrance loggia. One door leads to a twin bedroom and bathroom. The front door opens into a spacious entrance hall, which sets the feeling of this very special house. An arched short passage leads to a small kitchen in one side wing, with a washing machine. Beyond it is a breakfast room / study, with a door leading to the hillside. On the other side of the hall, a large dining /drawing room occupies the other wing. From the elegant dining area french windows lead to a furnished terrace looking across the beautiful valley with a castle topping the view. The sitting area has comfortable welcoming, ample sofas and armchairs, a stone fireplace, and another door to the outside. On the first floor, the landing forms another sitting room, with a large Tuscan fireplace. A summer sitting room is provided by the loggia, with twin open arches reflecting those on the ground floor. A double bedroom has a large dressing room / bathroom and the other double bedroom has its own bathroom. An open staircase leads to the tower, which is kept closed. Proportions are just right, and the comfortable furniture is the personal, precious collection of the owner, while the decorations include some beautiful frescoes and paintings by the owner.

All this quiet perfection is only 3 km from Vagliagli, a pretty village in the middle of Classic Chianti with a few shops and bars and one of the best restaurants in the district. A few kilometres further away Radda, with a livelier atmosphere. Touring is easy, through Chianti to Siena in one direction and Florence in the other, and this lovely, rurally elegant, house and its gardens form the setting for a wonderful, memorable, Tuscan holiday.
