DARLINGTON BIRTH PLACE OF THE RAILWAYS
The lodge is just north of the site of the original Darlington to Stockton railway line with the Fighting Cocks public house and restaurant in nearby Middleton st George being the ticket office for rail journeys on the line.
The Darlington Head of Steam Museum has a pictorial model of the whole line showing the Fighting Cocks as well as all of the places now confined to history. The museum is located not far from the town centre and is around 10 minutes drive from the lodge. Parking is free,
The lodge is in easy travelling distance to both of the NRMs with Locomotion at Shildon being only a few miles up the road in County Durham ant the NRM at York being only a 30 minute rail journey from Darlington Railway Station.
There is direct access from the platform at York into the museum.
If you wish to explore the City of York there is a road train leaving the Museum to the City centre every few minutes and returning to the station at regular intervals.
Both museums are free and well worth a visit ffor any one who is interested in rail travel.
For those wishing to see coast and country a trip to Whitby is well worthwhile. Whitby is about one hours travel to the south east and is a charming seaside resort with a number of attractions. It had as wealth of charm as well as excellent beaches and the Abbey situated on the East cliff reached by some 99 steps is the setting for Bram Stokers novel Dracula. With pirate gravestones and a church interior which will not be forgotten it is well worth the climb.
Just to the West of Whitby and well signposted from the "Moor" road is the town of Grosmont home to the North Yorks Moors Railway. A fully working steam railway travelling to Pickering a typical Yorkshire Market town and passing through some spectacular scenery made famous by the BBC series Hartbeat. The line has a station and stop at Goathlad which is the setting for most of the series
Beamish is situated near to Chester le Street the home of Durham County Cricket 2008 Fisrts Class Champions. And is about a 40 minute drive from the lodge.
It is worth a full days visit as this award winning open air museum has everything from a working farm to and underground coal mine a shop that sells victorian sweets to an array of other attractions including a train ride on the replica Stevensons Roket used to celebrate the birthof the railways. All attractions are connected by a tram system encompassing the spirit tof this Victorian working environment.
Situated to the west with direct access from the A66 and only 90 minutes drive is the English Lake District and are of outstanding beauty and dramatic scenery.
With excellent walks, rides and even boat trips on the lakes.
Situated 3 miles from Darlington but in a rural setting the lodge is off the roman road coneecting tMiddlleton St George and Sadberge.Try post code on Google Earth then move to next house North.
