Casa Gherardini is a lovely two bedroomed apartment on the upper floor of a two storey former palazzo. Situated on one of the narrow streets which cluster round the Duomo of old medieval Barga, the apartment is beautifully furnished and comprises of an entrance hall, large sitting room with dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a double bedroom, twin bedroom, and a shower bathroom.
There are lovely views accross the teracotta rooftops of Barga, of the Duomo and the Apuane Mountains. The house is entered from the back through a pretty walled garden, complete with outdoor furniture. The imposing tower of the Duomo creates a great atmosphere and the hilly Old Town is virtually traffic free, making it particularly safe for children.
The small medieval town of Barga is one of the prettiest little "cittadini" in Tuscany. It is situated on a slope surrounded by terraced hills and the spectacular Apuane Mountains.
Barga is rich in history, was politically associated with Florence for more than five centuries and evidence of this can be seen in the narrow winding streets within the walls and battlements of the Old Town.
Nowadays Barga has become a place well known for its artistic events, with art exhibitions by internationally famous artists throughout the year, a well known Summer Opera Festival, theatre, jazz, pop, and local food festas.
There is a fine outdoor public swimming pool which is open from June to September.

Local activities in and around Barga, Tuscany
Barga is situated on the border of the Garfagnana area of Northern Tuscany. The area is famous for its panoramic scenery, attractive medieval villages and wholesome food. The Garfagnana is a compact area, easily accessible, with the spectacular Apuane mountains and the Appenine hills on each side of the Serchio river.
The area is recreational, superb for walking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. Barga is connected by road and rail to the fantastic walled city of Lucca (45 minutes), Pisa (75 mins.) and Florence (110 mins.)
Nearby Castelnuovo is a market town with fine shops and tourist information for the Garfagnana. The resort towns of Bagni di Lucca, with its famous spa baths, and Coreglia Antelminelli are close by.
The Garfagnana is known in Italy for it's rustic food. A fine midweek lunch with wine and coffee costs around 9-10 euros, and multi course "tasting" meals are available for 20-25 euros.
