On the Montagnola hills west of Siena, almost every building and wall reflects a proud and tangible history. Clearly the beauty and fertility of this countryside have been appreciated for many centuries, and the castles, churches and towers bear extraordinary testimony to this. One of the most splendid private landmarks is the estate of Poggiarello at Toiano. An avenue of cypresses leads to a tall medieval tower, a smaller tower and a villa in a walled enclosure; with an exquisite little Peruzzi chapel these form a harmonious whole on their own on a small plateau in the hills near Sovicille. The main tower was built around 1100 as a defence for Siena. The smaller tower was built around 1300 and Baldassare Peruzzi designed the jewel of a family chapel in the 1500s.

The owner and his family live in the main villa, and three ex-farm workers' houses are let to Invitation To Tuscany guests. The houses are traditional Tuscan farmhouses providing comfortable, simple accommodation in a very special setting. La Vigna and Grappolo are very similar:each house,on the first floor,is reached by its own external staircase. Each apartment has a dining kitchen,and a sitting room.Rooms have terracotta tiled floors,beamed ceilings and colour washed walls,and the traditional furniture is carefully chosen for comfortable holiday accommodation.

The owner's residence in the villa and tower is separated from the farmhouses by a gated wall. In front of the houses a small hedged lawn shaded by mature holm oaks, faces the stables, with furniture for each house for al fresco drinks and meals. To the side, across the gravel drive, is a large lawn with a canopied pergola, sun furniture and a big swimming pool, hidden from view by a dense hedge. Toiano is minutes away from Sovicille with restaurant and shops, and only 10-15 minutes drive from central Siena. The courteous, English speaking owners, are able to organise all sorts of services to make your holiday extra special, such as serving continental breakfast on the lawn, arranging cooks, and conducted tours of the infinite artistic, shopping, wine tasting and culinary treasures of Tuscany. Staying here you are immersed in the past but within arm's reach of the practical comforts of life.
