Three storey, stone built village house with large roof terrace on a quiet, narrow street just behind the village square. Situated in the old fortified quarter of the authentic wine-producing little village of Estagel with lots of local amenities.
Romantic four poster bed, large dinning and sitting room, modern kitchen and shower, loads of storage space and beautiful spiral staircase.
Our house is a calm, airy, light retreat after thrilling days touring the splendours of the Pyrenees Mountains, swimming in the Mediterranean or the pure local rivers and a great base for touring the up-and-coming vineyards of the Agly valley.
The village has all the shops you will need, doctors, cafe/bars etc and the region had a wealth of castles, beaches, galleries, activity centres and restaurants to entertain everyone.

Estagel was once ruled by the Kings of Aragon and has passed between French and Spanish control. It still has a strong Catalan identity and the original houses were built in a circle, side by side for defence. Our house is on the inner circle on a street too narrow for cars and is approached through the old gatehouse which still houses the town clock and bells.
You'll probably spend most of your days relaxing on the private roof terrace, watching the swallows swooping over the hot clay tiles whilst you enjoy fine local wines, cheeses and barbecues. The terrace is equipped with a wooden table and parasol, six matching chairs, a sun longer and barbecue.
The front door opens into a hallway and black and white marble staircase that spiral up to the first sand second floors. The two big rooms on the ground floor house the washing machine etc but as yet are unconverted. They provide loads of storage space for bags, bikes and beach kit.
The first floor has a modern fitted kitchen with French windows onto a small balcony. It has been well equipped by the cook in the family. Next to the kitchen is a large dining and sitting room. The long wooden table comfortably seats eight. We have recently installed a large television with satellite freeview channels from all over Europe. The leather armchair and sofa are supplemented by a high quality double sofa bed.
The double bedroom on the first floor has French windows and a four poster bed. It is adjacent to the shower room and separate W.C.
On the top floor is the largest bedroom with a double bed and walk in wardrobe. Next to it is a small bedroom that provides the access to the roof terrace and also has a double bed. Please note that whilst it is the sunniest room in the house it is definitely a big bed in a small room!

Local activities in and around Perpignan, Languedoc-Roussillon
Just up the D612 on the way to Millas from Estagel is the ancient hermitage and dramatic viewpoint of Forca Real. There is no better place to take in the scale and beauty of the Pyrenees Orientales and to orientate yourself before exploring the majestic Pyrenees Mountains to the south, the fine sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages to the east, the astonishing Cathar Castles to the north and west and the vineyards all around. There are three way marked paths on Forca Real itself including a botanical tour through the wild, aromatic garrigue. It's the place to get truly acquainted with the region and to whet your appetite for joys to come. Take a map, a guide book, a picnic and a camera for a truly memorable planning meeting!
Estagel is on the Agly River, the most northerly of three parallel valleys that form the departement. Chateau Queribus stands high on the sharp limestone ridge that runs along the northern side of the valley and forms the border with Aude. Just beyond are the village of Tautavel and the site of the oldest human remains in Europe. It's also a great place to while away an afternoon bathing in the crystal clear river and admiring the gorge as would our ancestors.
The departement has hosts of castles and monasteries, beaches and activities, restaurants and clubs. The following websites give a taste of what is on offer but nothing beats spending long lazy days wandering the mountain roads and sitting in simple cafes deciphering what is going on from friendly Catalans. Day trips to the fairy tale city of Carcassonne, tax-free Andorra and even Barcelona are all recommended, if you want to stir from the village!
We have copies of The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet publications in the house. (Please leave for the next guests!)

Please leave the house as you would want to find it for your holiday or ask us to make an arrangement for our caretaker to clean it for you. (30 Euro charge.)
The stone buildings and narrow streets amplify sound so please respect the local tradition of being quiet after 10 pm. Lots of people have to be up at 5 am to work on the vines and we don't want to jeopardise important work!
