Luxury Beachside Apartment - Every room looks on to the Ocean
Apartment with 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4
John Carter, the travel journalist with the Sunday mail wrote about Armacao de Pera. When I first visited in 1962 I remember the local Hotel stood in isolation a few hundred yards from the church and a cluster of cottages that made up this tiny village. It has changed beyond recognition but the village still sits on prime location and once you get to the seafront there are shops, smart restaurants, bars and all the trimmings of a lively resort town I would gladly return. Sorry we are fully booked for 2008. It has been a very good year for us, and we have met some very charming and respectful clients, which is always a pleasure.
We are altering our pricing structure for next year, and in some cases reducing prices. We feel it is going to be a hard year with fuel increases, so we want to try and help our clients where we can. We are offering a reduction for one month with a discount to 250 pounds per week or over two months a discount to 200 pounds per week before the end of June.
Our luxury apartment is just steps away from the Hotel John Carter talks about in his Sunday Times Travel page. Every room enjoys panoramic views of the wonderful Algarve Coastline. Our seven mile beach is one of the best and flatest in the Algarve, and is wonderful for that early morning walk. In the summer you can enjoy water sports from the beach, or just lay back on a lounger and take in the sea air. There are many beach cafe's, so you can have lunch without even having to put your flip flops on.
Or perhaps you fancy a cliff walk and dropping down into one of the secluded coves...too energetic....well let a fisherman take you there in his boat for just 10 euro's.The apartment has modern good quality furniture, a t.v. with English programmes. The lounge/diner and both bedrooms have air conditioning or heating with the touch of a button, and each room has patio doors leading onto a long balcony with loungers and table and chairs for El Fresco dining. The beds have sprung matresses. The Master bedroom has a double, and the second bedroom has twin beds. We have books, c.d's to entertain you and a kitchen that is so well equiped it's a home from home.

Armacao's History since 1661
Situated at the mouth of the river Alcantarilha, it is believed that the Romans had a military base here to protect those living along the river. Little remains of that base , but old salt tanks, used by the Romans to collect salt to preserve the fish, have been found on the beach. In 1661 a fort was built at Armacao to provide protection from Piirates and Invaders. Named after the local patron saint, Antonio Da Pedra, local fshermen felt safe enough to settle below it's walls. A chapel ws built within the fort. Originally given the same name as the fort it is now known as Ermida Nossa Senhora Dos Allitos and has hardly changed since it was built. Parts of the fort were also rebuilt the building left to the doorway housed troops before becoming a customs house and latterly a police station. In the mid 19th century fishermen built houses and developed commercial activities. including boat building, fish processing, and rope and sail making.
Old Town Armacao
In the warren of narrow streets and alleys everyone, young and old, male or female were employed to keep the boats out to sea to catch the fish, especially tuna. A few of those streets remain today with names bearing wtness to the activities they housed. Street of the Fishing nets, Street of sails, Street of Candles and lamps for example. Wandering through them it is easy to imagine life more than a century ago.The decline of the tuna stocks coincided with the emergence of tourism in the 1960's attracted by the spectacular expanse of golden sands. The Hotel Garbe was the first to be built. Today Armacao has 4,000 residents and the summer tourists swell the number
Chapel Nossa Senhora da Rocha
(Our Lady of the rocks) This tiny chapel was built by the local fishermen and perches on a promontory just west of Armacao to commemorate a sighting of the Virgin Mary on this spot. Another tiny chapel at the sideof the parish church in Alcantarilha, inland a few miles from Armacao is open to visitors. It's contents are somewhat macabre, the walls and ceilings consist of tightly packed limb bones and skulls of 1,500 former parishioners.
Up the creek
One of the delights of the Algarve is that there is so much more to do than just lay on the beach. For a day out with a difference Go up the river Alvor in a canoe with paddles. Frank Coopman a friendly Dutchman runs his well organised river trip every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday in the Summer. The trips have to take place when the tide is coming in. The river all but disappears when the tide is out. Thats when Alvor esturary becomes a mud flat. But this reliance on the tide means you paddle with the current rather than against it.
Porches for Pottery
Porches situated on the N125, just west of Armacao (up the hill past the super market) is the centre of the Algarve's Ceramics trade. There are a number of Artisanato establishments dotted along the way selling fantastic designs . Some of the shops here offer excellent value for money although you might have to brush up your Portuguese in order to negotiate (don't worry there's a phrase book in the apartment). If it is original, high quality hand painted pottery you are after, you will find it at Plaria Pequena and Porches Pottery. No Language problems here; The first is run by a Scotsman, and the second by an Irish family.
Armacao de Pera is situated between Albufeira and Carvoeira and within easy reach of Vilamoura From Airport. Take A22 Westbound Motor Way (Portimao,Lagos). Exit Alcantarilha roundabout, Armacao sign.
