Local activities in and around Anstruther, Central Scotland
Anstruther or Ainster is the largest and busiest of the 'East Neuk' coastal towns. It was, until 50 years ago, a busy fishing village, but the demise of the North Sea herring shoals around this time saw fishing disappear. The history of fishing, from the earliest times to the present day, can be remembered by a visit to the Scottish Fisheries Museum. Anstruther is now a bustling town with a variety of shops, pubs and excellent restaurants, mainly specialising in seafood. Regular boat trips to the Bird Sanctuary on the Isle of May.
Golfers are close to the world famous courses at St Andrews, the excellent new Kingsbarns links and the historic East Neuk links of Crail and Elie. Many other excellent Scottish links courses within easy reach and there are many special deals on offer.
Walkers can enjoy the fabulous Fife coastal walk which links The Forth and Tay bridges and which leads past the front door of Sea Braes. Cyclists can roam around the interesting and varied East Fife cycle paths, one of which runs past the front door. Anglers can fish from the rocks at the bottom of the garden, (where crabs and lobsters also can be caught). There are many other local opportunities for fishing from piers or locally hired boats. Water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the nearby award winning beaches and in Particular the water sports facilities at nearby Elie. "East Neuk Outdoors" situated just over 100 yds away offer a range of activities for adults and children which include Canoeing, Kayaking, Absailing, Mountain Biking, Archery, Orienteering and Coastal Scrambles. Pony trecking and riding is available at nearby Kilconquhar. Nature lovers, orthothologists and botanists will find plenty to do with a vast array of wildlife seen from the garden, the rocks beyond or in the near locality. Ornathologists in particular will want to go on one of the daily boat trips from Anstruther to the Isle of May.
