Local activities in and around Matlock, Heart of England
Cromford offers the perfect base for a holiday at any time of the year, whatever your interests. Set in the beautiful Derwent Valley, the village occupies a stunning position. With a river, a canal and a brook all running through it and surrounded by attractive wooded hills and rocky limestone outcrops, Cromford offers endless scenic walks. Add to this its good range of local amenities, including a traditional and well-stocked general store, newsagent, butcher, chemist, post office, pubs serving food, tearooms and a restaurant and you have every reason to hang up your car keys for the duration of your stay!
The village - a World Heritage Site - also has much to offer visitors in terms of historic interest. Sir Richard Arkwright built the World's first water powered cotton mill here which now houses a museum, a range of craft shops and a tea-room/restaurant.
For those wishing to explore a little further afield, there are many spectacular hill and dale walks and pretty villages to visit within a short drive of the cottage in the Peak District National Park.
Cyclists too will be spoiled for choice - the High Peak Trail starts at Cromford, whilst the Tissington and Monsal Trails and Carsington Water (circular route) are all close by. Cycle hire is available nearby, both at Middleton Top (2 miles away) and Carsington Water. These cycle routes are perfect for families, being traffic-free.
The neighbouring Victorian spa town of Matlock Bath offers a number of tourist attractions, most notably the Heights of Abraham, with its cable car ride and hilltop caverns. The small and interesting town of Wirksworth, just to the south of Cromford, is well worth a visit too, especially during its popular Arts Festival in September. Also close by is Crich Tramway Museum - a wonderful family day out - and the fine historic houses of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Tissington Hall. Alton Towers, Bakewell and the caves at Buxton and Castleton are all within reach.
The village of Cromford is easily accessible from the North and South. A map is sent upon receipt of the rental.
There is a train station with limited service within walking distance of Cromford.
