You can even reach the beaches of Greece in less than two hours if all of this leaves you wanting more.
Situated in the foothills of one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful mountain ranges, Bansko is a charming and historic town with a stunning alpine backdrop formed by the Pirin Mountains and has year-round charm and activities for all the family. Combining its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities with the atmosphere of an ancient Bulgarian town from the 10th century, the town boasts a wealth of culture and history, as well as traditional taverna-style restaurants and colourful folklore. The traditional stone, wooden buildings and cobbled streets are an integral part of its charm and character and many relics and monuments survive from its past.
The Pirin Mountains create excellent skiing conditions for all levels of skiers and snowboarders and provide equally stimulating summer activities, with well-marked long hiking trails serviced by hikers’ chalets, as well as opportunities for climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, and bird watching. The National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, having over 60 glacial lakes, waterfalls, caves and many rare and endemic species.
Other activities in and around the town include golf, ice skating and bowling. Further afield, white-water rafting, canoeing and paragliding trips can be organised. The nightlife is equally varied, with many picturesque mehanas serving traditional local food and wine, often with live folk music, or more contemporary clubs, bars and casinos. Each August, the week-long International jazz festival is increasingly popular.

There is a lift to all floors but there are also some stairs to be negotiated, which could limit suitability for some people.
Local activities in and around Bansko, West and Mountains
Skiing information: There are 14 pistes totalling 65km, including an uninterrupted 16 km run starting from Todorka Peak at the highest point of the ski center, all the way to base station of the Gondola plus cross country and excellent off piste skiing. A multi-million Euro project has recently seen the installation of new lifts, including an eight-person gondola and snow cannons to ensure good conditions. The Ski and Snowboard School offers good tuition, including children who are cared for at the Junior Ski Club. In addition to on-piste skiing, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy a fun park which offers fans of extreme winter sports the option to ski over artificial bumps and jumps as well as to build their own. Also, the half-pipe located near Bansko’s famous snow towers, offers both skiers and snowboarders an arena to show off their latest tricks. The ski season is one of the longest; roughly mid December until the end of April.
Other local attractions: Famous for its many mineral hot springs with high therapeutic qualities, the nearby village of Dobrinishte, located only 5 km from the town, is a must visit. The healing effects of the thermal springs in these mountains have been famous since antiquity.
Pirin National Park encompasses rugged alpine peaks that rise above 8,202ft (2,500m). The magnificent landscape is made up of old forests, waterfalls, caves and areas of limestone that are home to the endangered edelweiss and the Pirin poppy. Characteristic to the park is the abundance of rare and endemic species of plants and animals, and the unique environment is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural and National Heritage site. Holy Trinity Church with its fine belfry and clock tower is famous for its collection of icons and murals painted by local Bansko artists who once made the Bansko School of Painting one of the best in Bulgaria.
