Pen Mill Cottage - Farm cottage on Somerset/Dorset border
Cottage with 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 7, Garden
Pen Mill Cottage is situated in the heart of the wonderful, unspoilt Somerset countryside. Located near the Somerset/Dorset/Wiltshire borders, adjoining the Stourhead estate, this delightful, self-catering holiday cottage is 5 minutes from A303/M3. London under 2 hours by good road.
The spacious cottage sleeps 6/7 people and lies at the lower end of a hidden valley, in an idyllic setting with three cascading ponds. The peace and quiet of the farm attracts many wild animals and unusual birds. It is an ideal place to relax: after a couple of days sitting on the terrace overlooking the ponds and grazing cattle, sheep and horses, you will feel a new person.
The owners, Peter and Sarah Fitzgerald live in the farmhouse over the quiet lane. The large sunny garden is perfect for a family as it offers tremendous scope for playing, and the stream and ponds provide endless hours of amusement for children of all ages.
Converted from an old stone barn, this is a self-catering cottage in a peaceful, secluded location, overlooking the farmyard with horses and chickens — ideal for an away-from-it-all holiday. Children are welcome and, being on one level, the cottage is highly suitable for the elderly and those less able to move around.
The 150 acre farm is run by Peter and Sarah Fitzgerald and has been in the family for nearly 50 years. It is farmed organically with hedges laid in the traditional style & at present there are horses, sheep & cattle, not forgetting the free range chickens that wander everywhere.
The cottage is furnished to a high standard. Sitting Room: A large, spacious room with french windows, log fire and seating for 7 people. There are books and games for children. Kitchen/Diner: The sun pours into the big kitchen which is the hub of the house with seating for 8 people, 4 door AGA and a French door leading to the terrace with views over the pond. The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave cooker, fridge-freezer, magimix, dishwasher and washing machine. There is also a generous supply of quality crockery and glassware.
The bedrooms are spacious with quality carpets and hotel standard beds. The master & twin bedrooms have views over the terrace and up the pond garden, while the smaller double is close to the front door & shower room, which makes it self-contained and convenient for someone less able to move about.
The village of Penselwood was one of Britain's 24 major cities in the 8th century, although this is hard to imagine, as it is now a small rural community with only the sound of animals to keep you awake at night.Originally the mill made ticking for mattresses, and the course of the old water aqueduct can be seen in the fields. Close by is Egbert's stone, where in the 9th century Alfred the Great gathered his troops before his important victory over the Danes.
