Plessala the local village is in an extremely scenic location with a trout lake, surrounded by a small park where local festivals are celebrated with fireworks.
Walking and cycling routes circle the commune, which the Tour de France passed through in 2006. Its situation on the River Lie means Plessala is a focal point for Anglers visiting the region, while just 3km down-river at La Prenessaye kayaks can be hired.
Nearby 11th century Moncontour alternates with more famous Dinan to hold a realistic bi-annual medieval faire which is a sightseeing must as are the castles at Josselin, Cap Frehel and St Malo.
There is a large pool complex at Loudeac, but for a more local & sedate setting there is an ancient stepping-stone river crossing just upstream which is an ideal spot for a paddle and a picnic.
A wide variety of options are available locally for eating out, including traditional Breton creperies and auberges, excellent mussel or seafood restaurants, a Basque eatery, a medieval themed bistro & formal award winning gourmet restaurants.
Many of the surrounding towns have weekly markets selling fresh farm produce and local craft goods; there are also numerous antique markets throughout the year.
The nearby North coast has stunning scenery with small rocky coves filled with sailing boats, stretching flat golden sands and shelving inlets where mussels are farmed, all overlooked by open moorland.
Brittany also has several high quality golf courses, notably the international course at Val Andre, which is set above a very beautiful long sandy beach, just 30 minutes drive from Plessala.
Lamballe Market
Every thursday morning throughout the year. A really traditional large Breton market, used by locals to buy and sell home-made produce including farm grown vegetables & meat, fresh fish and shell-fish, plus celtic jewellery and other crafts.
La Mulette, Moncontour
The place to eat mussels. Reknown for it's vast range of moules recipes, but always having a tasty meat and fish alternative available for non-shellfish eaters. Friendly atmosphere, good wine list, not to be missed
La Roche au Cerf, Plessala
An ancient stone river crossing, reputed to still be used by deer. A magically peaceful spot to cool off on summer evenings, take a picnic, explore the ruins of the old water mill, wander down river beside the Lie for a while or just sit and relax at a place used for centuries to cross the water.
Le Vaublanc, near Plessala
A nineteenth century iron forge in a riverside beautiful setting; now used as a bakery by a religious order who are pleased to show the wood fuelled ovens to members of the public dropping by to buy one of the many varieties of stoneground bread they produce.
Centrally located Plessala is easily reached from the ports of Brittany & Normandy, or via Dinard, Rennes, Brest or Nantes airports served by Ryanair & Flybe from UK & Eire. Calais is a 5 hour drive.
