Casa da Cascata - Beautifully restored hillside stone cottage
Cottage with 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, Garden, Swimming Pool
This is one of the most exceptional locations in the region, if not Portugal, at the end of a quiet country lane in the gorgeous Serra da Lousã. All you are likely to hear are birdsong and the gentle rush of the cascades. The 12-metre swimming pool (exclusive to Casa da Cascata) is very special: water is fed from a pure mountain spring through 600 mtrs of black tubing in the full sun - no chlorine, pumps or boring tiles! Foot-friendly smooth shingle makes it feel like a river.
The gardens (over one acre) are magical: lots of cascades; a pond; big rocks; little terraces; winding paths; exotic plants and shrubs; petanque court. The views down the valley are stunning. Great walks all around. Free use of two mountain bikes. Generous welcome hamper. Use of owner's computer. Owner was an estate agent, and is pleased to offer impartial advice to house-hunters.
May be booked in conjunction with Casa de Noz, a luxury one-bedroom cottage just 35 mtrs away.

The cottage is cosy and well equipped. Satellite TV, DVD, fitted kitchen, log fire, radiators in every room. Books and games. Downstairs bedroom has adult bunk beds. Upstairs bedroom has double bed and balcony with heart-stopping views. Luxury shower room. Towels and linen provided. Large patio with bbq.
The region is arguably the most beautiful in Portugal, with an amazingly green and diverse landscape, and unspoiled by mass tourism. From the high mountains (with ski slopes) in the east, through rolling verdant hills to the flat lagoon lands of the coast, you can 'visit' Austria, Scotland, Tuscany, France, Greece and Florida! Glorious sandy beaches, empty even in summer. Empty roads, too. Crystal clear rivers and lakes (tropically warm in summer) are great for swimming. Absurdly cheap restaurants. Locals who actually don't hate the English! Charming towns and villages, and sites of historic interest.
The local capital is Coimbra (c. 40 mins by car or rail), which is a picturesque riverside university city. Good shopping and links to Lisbon and Porto.
Portugal has Europe's most benign winter climate, so why not treat yourself to an inexpensive winter break?
You'll return wondering why this Eden remains so undiscovered, but very glad it isn't!
