Fournes is a small working village, about 20 kms west of Avignon. Population 650. Its origins are mediaeval. It is sited on a small hillock quite close to the autoroute - our (southern) side of the hill is protected from sight & sound of it -surrounded by vineyards and ‘garrigue’. There are no tourists.
The house - once 4 dwellings - is not luxurious but it is comfortable, full of character, roomy and fun for those whom it suits. The entrance to the house is, as yet, unrestored, but don't be put off - thereafter you occupy the beautifully restored quarters. There is no air conditioning but with thick walls and a good through breeze it is generally very comfortable. Electric fans are available for heatwaves.
Ground floor: Ensuite blue Bathroom/Bedroom with twin 3' beds, marble fireplace, basement balcony.
1st floor: huge L shaped open plan living space (comprising kitchen, dining and sitting areas) with large stone fireplace. Through antique swing doors to double/study bedroom. The stone bathroom is adjacent, on the mezzanine floor of the large hall of the house. The ground floor of the hall itself is not yet restored so currently it is used only for storage. The cool shaded terrace and a south facing balcony are also on this floor.
Top floor: study/bedroom with sofa bed & a separate shower unit. Sliding glass wall (double glazed) gives access to the top terrace with panoramic views.
Our private garage parking by arrangement, or else municipal car park close by.

Local activities in and around Remoulins, Languedoc-Roussillon
Swimming / Water Sports: A 10 minute stroll ( or 2 minute drive) to the local River Gardon & lake. Also at the Pont du Gard & Collias. Less than an hour from the closest mediterranean coast. Beaches at Le Grau du Roi (50 mins), Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, La Plage d'Arles and La Plage Beauduc: all very different, all worth a visit (see users guide).
Plein Air: Horse Riding in the village. Canoeing at the Pont du Gard. Sheer rock climbing at Collias. Wonderful bike rides & walking. Golf at Nimes, Montpellier, Uzes, Avignon. In winter, Skiing & Sledging at Mont Ventoux - slightly further afield but easily reachable. Great walks there too, summer or winter. Bird watching in the Camargue.
Arts/Culture Concerts held almost nightly during the summer - many out of doors in Chateaux or else in old churches or other ancient sites. The renowned Avignon Festival is in July/early Aug - a challenge to the Edinburgh festival.
Once you've seen opera and epic films in a roman amphitheatre, little else matches up. (at Arles, Orange, Nimes).
Street Markets (both food & brocante) daily in the local towns & villages: Uzes on a Saturday morning is now an institution.
Wine tasting (Chateau Neuf, Daumas Gassac, Pic St Loup & many other great local vineyards). Route des Vins goes through the village. The village wine is not at all bad.
As you would expect, excellent restaurants as well as good cheap eating are everywhere. Don't miss ***Michelin 'cheap' lunch menu in Montpellier - well worth the excursion (see our guide). Follow by trip to the sea if you can keep afloat.
Bull games (not fights - the only risk is to the young men) are in village arenas and also running around the village streets in the Summer.
Be sure to visit the Pont du Gard, the Camargue, and the small villages on the back route to Uzes (St Hilaire, Vers, Castillon, St Maximum), the local towns of Arles, Uzes, Nimes.
History is everywhere.
Pont du Gard
You are not much more than a stone's throw away from this spectacular Roman Aqueduct which spans the Gardon River. The 2000 year old Monument is situated in natural countryside that was itself inhabited in prehistoric times. Now a World Heritage Site, it is visited by over a million people a year - the second most popular provincial site in France. It has something for everyone: awe inspiring majesty, especially at night; a must for lovers of history & archeology; fascinating as one of the best known civil engineering feats in the world; wonderful too for walking, canoeing & swimming. Free local residents parking on request.
- A must for lovers of birds, especially flamingoes, and wild emptiness. Important to go to the areas we recommend or you might be disappointed. Combine with visiting Arles and have an absinthe in Van Gogh's Café de la Nuit
This historic & beautiful walled city - another world heritage site - is 15-20 minutes by car. Vibrant at any time, the last 3 weeks of July to the first week in August is festival time and the streets are filled, day and night, with musicians and performance of all sorts. Home of the Palais des Papes and that old bridge, its myriad of little streets, gorgeous shops, fun opera & wonderful eating places make it must for a day or evening out.
Teeming with tourists but well worth a visit anyway, especially if you combine it with a walk along Les Alpilles with breathtaking views of it all (Grande Randonée 6 ) - see walking guides in the house.

Guestbook
"I would just like to thank you for allowing us to stay in your house in Fournes. Of our trip to France - Biarritz, Provence, Paris - this was the highlight and our best stay anywhere. The house was wonderful and the only place that truly felt like a haven away from home. My only regret is that we didn't just stay in Fournes for the whole time in Provence. Lucie was also very friendly and helpful...I hope to return and will definitely inform all my friends about staying there.
" - André van Niekerkvan (South Africa, July 2008)
"Just a brief note to say that we enjoyed our week in Fournes. The weather was just right and it is an ideal centre to see all the local sights.. Lucie was very helpful and the village was delightful... Many thanks
" - Robert Beaumont (UK - June 2008)
