Sovicille is situated about 10 km south-west of Siena in the direction of Massa Marittima and Follonica. Sovicille’s territory stretches from La Montagnola Senese to the valley of the river Merse. The Commune of Sovicille had more medieval hamlets and villages than any other commune in Tuscany, of which some have been destroyed, others transformed into farmhouses and yet others still have maintained their original state.

The Università per Stranieri di Siena offers a variety of courses and undertakes scientific research on the diffusion of Italian language and culture.
Among the numerous courses offered are those in Italian language and culture and professional courses for teachers of Italian as a second language.
For centuries the Tuscan landscape has exerted a powerful hold on the imaginations of Italian city dwellers and foreign visitors with its human scale, and the merging of vineyards and olive groves into gardens and then into the villas themselves. With the revival of Classical culture from the fourteenth century, this landscape has been incorporated architecturally into the villas and gardens that grew in the environs of the cities of Florence and Siena, and later the villas created from castles, fortified abbeys and towers throughout the province.
The Palio horse race in Siena, which takes place twice a year on July 2nd and August 16th, is one of the most colourful and historic events in Italy, dating back to 1281.
The bareback race attracts a huge crowd to the magnificent Piazza del Campo in the centre of the city and consists of over an hour of colourful pageantry and costumed processions as well as the race itself, which is over relatively quickly. The race is between 10 of the city’s “contrade” or districts with each contrade having its own racing colours. Only 10 out of 17 contrade participate in the race due to space restrictions.
If you ever attend the Palio you'll never forget the excitement of the night before the race. The streets are bathed with soft golden light from hundreds of torches and lanterns. Groups of noisy Geese, Panthers and Tortoises flock by on their way to dinner for thousands: each contrada lays out rows and rows of 50-foot-long tables in its largest square.
The Maremma Natural Park
The Maremma Natural Park, in the Province of Grosseto, is one of the wildest parts of Italy and has been protected from 1975. Object of the Park is the conservation of natural, environmental and historical characteristics of Maremma serving the social purposes of such values, as well as the promotion of scientific research and naturalistic didactic.
The Park contains different ecosystems typical to southern Tuscany such as the Mediterranean maquis, pinewoods, dunes, rocky coastlines, the estuary of the Ombrone river and un-drained swamps.
Many species of plant and animal life live in this protected area, which, in past centuries, was an important factor in the settlement of man as early as the Middle Paleolithic era, as remains found in several caves show. The maquis, pinewoods and swamp areas are home to many species of birds.

"Dear Maria and Marcel,
We really enjoyed staying at your house. It is such a well kept home, so clean, comfortable and cosy. And what a beautiful garden (or should we rather call it a park?) you have! We loved sitting there, gazing into the woods, sleeping on the hammock, walking around enjoying all the different kind of lovely trees you have. It's such a relaxing place!
You've thought of every single detail which has made our holiday so special. We definitely want to come back and enjoy more" - Örpen, Patrick-Netherlands, August 2008
