There is a wealth of natural and historical sites to visit. For a day of spectacular scenery take 'Le Petit Train Jaune' or drive through the Têt Valley into the Pyrenees, exploring Prades with its Church of St Pierre and Villefranche de Conflent. Three kilometers from Prades is the lovely Abbey of St-Michel-de-Cuixa, with its crenellated tower and beautiful cloisters. Perpignan, is the second Catalan city after Barcelona, and is well worth exploring on foot, the Old Town has the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and the Cathédrale Saint Jean both dating from the 13th century. Céret is a beautiful market town with a modern art museum exhibiting paintings and works by Matisse, Chagall and Dali.
The coast has long, wide, flat sandy beaches with a wide range of water sports, international golf course at St Cyprien, beautiful walking country in the foothills of the Pyrénées Orientales. The beaches give way to rocky bays and old port towns as Collioure (the inspiration for many artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall…), Port Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer (famous for the production of the aperitif wine of the same name, Banyuls),…
