Outstanding riverside rural location, 'La Maison de la Distillerie' is a converted part of a very old Charentaise distillery, situated on the banks of a private river island on the River Charente.
The old Distillerie' has large windows with river views and on this beautiful river island of about 2 acres on the river Charente between Cognac and Angoulême. The property is close to the riverbank with its own garden and, since it is the tip of the island and almost surrounded by water, it is perfectly secluded.
Access to the house is by a private bridge and you can drive directly to the house where there is a parking space. The island enjoys outstanding scenic river view and the surrounding area is rural with some attractive small villages nearby. There is a local riverside bar and restaurant. The small town of Châteauneuf sur Charente is a 5-minute drive away.
The owners live in a separate, charming house on the island.

The property is not suitable for children under the age of 12 because of the proximity of the River.

Local activities in and around Angouleme, Charente/Vendee/W. Loire
Canoeing, fishing, walking, birdwatching or just relax by the river all on the door step. Kayaks can be hired from the riverside bar.
The fishing here is first class with carp of over 30lbs and large shoals of roach and bream, there are plenty of fishing spots to be found on the island and along the river bank.
A fishing licence can be bought in the local fishing tackle shop. The clarity of the water makes swimming a pleasure, whilst the towpaths allows pleasant walks in either direction. Much wildlife, including hoopoes, heron, golden orioles and kingfishers, can be seen.
The nearby village of St Simeux is within walking distance, there is a a riverside bar and restaurant which also sells fresh bread daily. The ancient small town of Chateauneuf sur Charente (6km) offers a good choice of shops, including brocantes, boulangeries, tabac, pharmacies, supermarkets, a fresh fish market (try the oysters!) and restaurants.
Cognac, some 20km away, is best known as the centre of cognac production. However, it also has a fascinating old town with period architecture and many shops and restaurants.
The famed cognac houses such as Martell, Remy Martin, and Henessey can be found in Cognac itself whilst the nearby town of Jarnac is the home of Courvoisier. You can taste and purchase cognac and pineau at all the major houses. More locally there are plenty of small producers of very special cognacs that can only be bought directly from their own distilleries.
Other towns which can be easily reached include Saintes, famed for its amphitheatre, and Angoulême with its ramparts, magnificent cathedral, wide variety of restaurants and shops and theatre.

A deposit of 30% is payable on booking and the balance is due 8 weeks prior to the holiday. A refundable security deposit of 150 euros against breakage is payable on arrival.
