Montpellier's history goes right the way back to the 11th century, when it became renowned as a trading post and centre of science and medicine. 'Ecusson' - the town's medieval core - is waiting to be discovered, with its international art gallery, medical museum, 12th century cathederal and parks, together with numerous gift shops and up-market boutiques.
There are too many activities to mention in Montpellier alone, but some of the highlights include dance, music and opera festivals, guided tours of the medieval town centre, together with a highly developed cycle path network that can be explored using the city's inexpensive bike rental service.
On top of that there is also an exhaustive list of trips to make outside of Montpellier, including the glorious coastline with long stretches of golden sand beaches starting just 6kms away, the fortress city of Carcassonne, the Roman city of Nimes, Norman Foster's Millau Bridge, the Camargue, the Cevennes, the wonderful fishing port of Sete, the amazingly well preserved village of Saint-Guilhem-Le Desert and the famous Roman acqueduct Pont Du Gard, to name just a few.
