Local activities in and around Tavira, Eastern Algarve
Tavira is one of the most architecturally attractive towns in the Algarve and its origin dates back to around 2000 BC. During the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors this town was considered of great importance due to its fishing industry.
There are golf courses at Benamor and Colina verde which lie just outside of Tavira.
Within a few minuites walk there is a recently opened 12 lane bowling alley with a large bar, dancefloor, excellent sound system and 2 outside seating areas.
Offshore, the island of Tavira offers 11 kilometres (8 miles) of some of the finest beaches in the region, being also part of the Ria Formosa nature reserve and popular among bird-watchers. It is also an ideal place for swimming. There are also bars and restaraunts on the island which is a short but pleasant ferry journey (cost Euro 1.80) from the centre of town or alternatively from the jetty. The jetty is roughly a 20 minute walk from the house. On the walk you are likely to come across many species of bird including Flamingos and Storks.
In Tavira itself their are numerous bars and restaurants that perpetuate a very much "al fresco" culture. There are also many historical and cultural points of interest including Churches, Art Galleries, a variety of interesting shops, a Camera Obscura and even a castle!
It can be reached direct by taxi from Faro airport (40Euros). Alternatively, you can catch the bus to Faro station then train to Tavira (approx Euros 5), The house is a 10 min walk from the station.

Rental Notes: All bed linen is provided, please leave linen in the laundry basket at the end of your stay. Bottled Gas is provided for hot water, washing, shower etc. This is normal in Portugal. Refills can be obtained from the Galp Gas shop on the corner of the ‘square’ (50M) this can be seen from the front of the house. They do deliver and will walk over to the house with the new bottle, and take away the empty for you. All I ask is that if you empty a bottle you refill it. Refills cost Euros 23. This will ensure that everyone who arrives at the property finds gas available. (I normally give the guy a Euro1 tip for doing the fetching and carrying.)
Guestbook
"We had a really lovely time thanks – the weather was incredibly hot – Tavira is lovely – I do hope it doesn’t get spoiled with high rise hotels and apartments – or too many British tourists…Its lovely the way it is. We found and loved shopping at the market – what a good touch of yours to have the fish cook book by Hugh FW in the house – that was great. If anyone else is interested in your house and they want to talk to anyone who has been, I would be happy to give your house a glowing report." - Judith Stephens.
"We arrived with no problems and love your place and Tavira. We are now in an internet cafe in Faro. Life doesn't get better than this. Thanks again for your place. We appreciated all the extra information you provided as well. when I get a chance we will put a testimonial on your website that will be positive and encouraging all to use your place. It is in a great location near all kinds of services and the town is very easy to navigate in and around.
" - Eileen Askew
"What a gem of a place!! I mean your house - as well as Tavira. A fortnight of solid sunshine and temperatures in the 30s. As well as 'beach' we went by train to St Antonio, buses to two other beaches, two concerts and a guitar festival, a Fado concert and -practically every night - some kind of folk music and dancing in the town's amphitheatre. We ate lots of traditional food and had an extremely good time. Very many thanks - probably the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday we've had together." - Robert and Alice
"Hello, Brendan.
We had a wonderful time, thank you - we loved every minute. Your house is perfect, so well placed and so well equipped, and a roof terrace to die for.
We ate at Vela 2 on our last night - do you know it? It's a wonderful family-run restaurant opposite the library which specializes in fish - the menu is "fish or meat". It serves plain Portuguese food - bread, olives, salad, potatoes, fish - and wine in a lively family atmosphere - it's brilliant.
I shall be going back" - Heather and Jane
