A couple of blocks south of Santa Engrácia stands Santa Apolónia, Lisbon’s main train station, whose new metro station opened last December, provided easier access to this side of the city. Lisbon most fashionable club, Lux, is sited by the docks opposite the station. West of the station, across Largo dos Caminhos de Ferro, rises the imposing Corinthian façade of the city’s military museum, the Museu Militar, set in a seventeenth-century munitions factory. There are some lavish azulejos and paintings of battles, though this is very traditional layout – old weapons in old cases – and lacks appeal unless you’ve an unusual interest in historical military campaigns and weaponry.
Some ten minutes walk east of the Museu Militar at Rua do Alviela 12, a side street off Calçada dos Barbadinhos, the Museu da Água is a limited, but surprisingly engaging, museum devoted to the development of the city’s water supply. It is housed in an attractive old pumping station, built in 1880 to force water up Lisbon’s steep hills. If you get a kick out of a watching demonstrations of nineteenth-century beam engines, this the place for you. While here, you can arrange a visit to the Aqeduto das Águas Livres. The “Free Waters Aqueduct” was opened in 1748, bringing reliable drinking water to the city for the first time, and the entire structure stretches some 60km, mostly underground (though sections of it can be seen on either side of the tracks on the train line to Sintra).
