La Casa Piccola is set on the wooded slopes of Mt Subasio, a beautiful regional park. It is a fully-restored farmhouse surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and woods that deserves it's title 'the green heart of Italy.' Here you can experience the best of the Umbrian countryside in a relaxing atmosphere while still being only 7 kilometres from ancient Assisi, with its cafes, bars and restaurants as well as the magnificent Basilica with its world-famous frescoes by Giotto.
Many will want to visit the sites associated with St Francis, the patron saint of the ecological movement while others will enjoy visits to the museums and galleries of the historic hill towns that are within easy reach. Lake Trasimeno, with its beaches and other water sports is a short distance away and Mt Subasio itself is criss-crossed with walking trails.

Local activities in and around Assisi, Umbria
Mt Subasio is a regional park covered largely by ancient woodlands and criss-crossed by walking trails. Some are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of wildlife like deer, wild boar or the porcupines that still live in its quieter corners. La Casa Piccola is situated on the edge of the woods and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It is in a hamlet, one of a group of five houses, with the Australian/English owner of the property sometimes resident in the house next door to answer any questions you may have about the area, shopping, restaurants etc. There are excellent local restaurants serving delightful Umbrian fare like ravioli stuffed with black truffles or lamb chops grilled over the fire. Nearby towns and villages often have summer festas where you can join in with the local people. In Assisi, there are shops, bars, restaurants and the magnificent 13th Basilica dedicated to St Francis, with its world-famous Giotto frescoes. Other historic centres like Spello, Spoleto, Perugia, Gubbio, Cortona, Arezzo and Siena are all within easy reach. A trip to Rome or Florence -- both about two and a half hours away either by train or car -- can easily be accomplished in a day.
In churches, museums or galleries you can often stumble across a masterpiece by mediaeval artists like Il Perugino, Piero della Francesca or Pinturicchio. For shoppers, Perugia is regarded as one of Italy's style capitals and there is also a large outlet complex an hour's drive away. Boating, fishing, pedaloes and swimming beaches are 45 minutes drive away at Lake Trasimeno. A holiday at La Casa Piccola will provide the peace of the beautiful Umbrian countryside for quiet times of relaxation while at the same time being within easy reach of bustling and historic towns where you can shop, dine or sightsee. The real charm of Umbria lies in its ability to maintain the best of its old traditions in a setting of unique beauty while at the same time taking on the best of the 21st century.
Perugia airport (Ryanair) is half an hour from the house by car. We recommend guests have a car while staying at La Casa Piccola. Directions to the house can be given at time of booking.
