Local activities in and around Rye, South East
Standing on the southern slopes of the Brede River the countryside around the village is timeless and lovely. From mid April to early May there are many bluebell woods to admire, streams with wild garlic in abundance, and there are wonderful walks which appear little used; something of a bonus if you are tired of hailing fellow walkers every hundred yards or so on the South Downs or Saxon Shore Ways. Brede also provides a rare chance to see the past in action and participate in its preservation for the future.
Known as the Brede Giants the local steam engines, which were used to pump water to the reservoir at Hastings are being restored and are well worth visiting.
The cottage a short distance from the town of Battle, famous for the Battle of Hastings and the market town of Rye, is an ideal place from which to explore the delights of the Sussex Heritage coastal towns and villages and of course the world-renowned Sussex gardens: Assuming you can tear yourself away from the Cottages garden!
