Local activities in and around Newhaven, South East
Steeped in maritime history Newhaven will appeal to anyone with a nautical flair. The Marina is one of the Sussex coasts hidden gems and West Quay is an ideal location to watch the fishing fleet come in and buy fresh fish. Yet whether it is yachting, scuba diving or any number of watersports that appeal, they can all be found in Newhaven. The town also holds a few surprises, including one of Sussexs rare sandy beaches and a market day frequently attended by French traders offering superb cheeses, pastries, leather goods and traditional craft items. A must for those with an eye for a bargain.
In an area of outstanding natural beauty the town is central to some beautiful countryside, including the South Downs and the Seven Sisters Country Park. Idyllic for walkers, from Kings House garden one can directly access the walks along the cliffs to Newhaven Fort and you can get down to the beach. Commanding stunning cliff top views the Fort, the largest fortification of its kind ever built on the English coast, is now open as a family attraction and offering a wide variety of activities. Built in 1860, the Fort played an important role in the First and above all, the Second World War, having a vital strategic function particularly during the Normandy landings. The Canadian units who took part in the Dieppe Raid left from here in 1942 and in memory of this event, it flies the Canadian flag. It certainly makes for a fascinating day out. Other musts to visit are the Martello Tower at Seaford and the Peacehaven Greenwich Meridian obelisk denoting the fact that the town stands on the meridian line.
If you are a gardener, a visit to Paradise Park Botanical Gardens with colourful and inspirational displays of a vast range of plants will inspire you with ideas for your garden and home.
Closer to home the resorts of Brighton and Eastbourne are within 20minutes drive and London can be reached by train in just one hour.
