The South Hams contains the towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Ivybridge, Salcombe, and Totnes. To the north it includes part of Dartmoor National Park, to the east borders Torbay, and to the west Plymouth. It contains some of the most unspoilt coastline on the south coast, including the promontories of Start Point, and Bolt Head. The entire coastline, along with the lower Avon and Dart valleys, form most of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With its rolling hills, wooded river valleys, patchwork fields, sandy beaches, a spectacular coast line and small picturesque villages. There are ample opportunities to walk, sail, surf, windsurf, fish, ride, golf etc. as virtually every sport and outdoor activity is well catered for
The South Hams always enjoys one of the mildest climates in Britain, protected as it is by Dartmoor National Park to the North and lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the South – even the name ‘Hammes’, is taken from the Anglo-Saxon for ‘sheltered place’.
The pretty little town of Modbury lies concealed from many angles by the folds of the South Hams' varying landscape. Dating back well over a thousand years, the town is steeped in history, with many historical building still lining its streets today. The 13th Century Church is impressive, and has some stunning stained glass work. The streets are also lined with houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, with their grand pillars and intricate details.
The main street is lined with a variety of shops, inns and cafes. The town has developed a reputation as a local centre for antiques and furniture. There is also a good deli and bakery, and plenty of cafes, making Modbury an ideal stopping off point for a morning or afternoon.
