Local activities in and around Fowey, South West
Fowey, pronounced Foy to rhyme with Joy! Situated on the south coast of Cornwall between Looe and Mevagissey, Fowey is not only an historic town but also a commercial seaport. Over the centuries Fowey has grown and now stretches for about a mile along the west bank of the River Fowey to the mouth of the river. Situated on the opposite bank, also at the mouth of the river, is the village of Polruan. A regular passenger ferry connects the two and further up river a car ferry runs from Fowey to Bodinnick on the other side of the river.
A natural harbour, Fowey is a haven for yachtsmen and has as many as 7,000 visiting yachts in a season. Fowey is an exporting port for china clay and as such you may see the ships making their way in and out of the harbour.
The writer and scholar Arthur Quiller-Couch settled here in 1891, and referred to the place as ‘Troy Town’ in many of his books. Daphne Du Maurier's locally based work, including Rebecca, is celebrated at an annual arts and literature festival based in Fowey. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit (1931), was written while she lived at Brodinnick. More about Fowey’s history can be found in the Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre, St. Fimbarrus' Church and the Fowey Museum.
Fowey lies in an Area of Outstanding Beauty and provides excellent country for walking and the pursuit of other outdoor activities. A rugged coastline, tranquil creeks and waterside villages all contribute to making exploring this part of the heritage coast a delight. You can take a short walk between the Fowey Esplanade and Readymoney Cove (¾ mile) or a longer walk to Gribbin's Head. The scenery between Readymoney Cove and Gribbin's Head is simply outstanding. At Gribbin Head, you'll also see the 84 foot daymark which was erected by mariners in 1832. From here you can continue on the Southwest Coast Path which heads to Polkerris and around St Austell Bay.
