Libellule (Dragonfly) is a recently converted 2 bedroom barn in Liboulas, a quiet hamlet overlooking the Gironde estuary, near the historic village of Talmont sur Gironde and just 5 miles from the nearest beaches at Meschers.
If you have young children, you'll find the 5 sheltered beaches at nearby Meschers ideal for your summer holiday. For older children, the long sandy beach at St Georges de Didonne (just fifteen minutes away) provides loads of waterports and activities.
If you are a birdwatcher, Libellule is a great base for the rich estuary habitats. We provide you with information on all the local birding spots, as well as field guides.
You'll find high quality produce in the local markets & vineyards to tempt you to make good use of the well-equipped kitchen or the barbecue. If you'd rather eat out, the nearest restaurant is in the village of Arces just 1 mile away, and there are plenty more within a ten minute drive.

The light, airy open plan living/dining/kitchen has a double height ceiling over the living area and is comfortably furnished with sofa & 2 armchairs, TV, DVD/CD player, amplifier & speakers. The dining table seats 4. The kitchen is well equipped with oven, gas hob, espresso machine, washer/dryer, dishwasher, & fridge-freezer. French windows to the front and to the courtyard provide lots of light. The ground floor bathroom has both shower & bath, and a heated towel rail.
Stairs lead to a gallery landing – a safety gate is available for young children. Bedroom 1 is a twin room with 2 very comfortable futon beds, canvas wardrobe & drawer units; & a velux window for stargazing. The main bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, bedside cupboards & antique pine chest of drawers & windows overlooking the garden and the courtyard, with a large ensuite shower room with heated towel rail.
Libellule has under-floor heating throughout, except in the twin bedroom which has an electric radiator. Good insulation & double glazing keep the cottage snug in the cooler months.
Libellule has its own private courtyard with carport. There is access to a further rear patio with garden furniture, and to the adjoining garden (shared with the owners’ house). There's plenty of lawn space for your children to play, or for you to relax in the hammock or on the loungers, whilst taking in the view down to the Gironde. Our roses & shrubs scent the air, whilst our resident nightingale serenades you. In season you can help yourselves to plums, figs, apples & pears straight from the tree & pick fresh herbs to flavour your cooking.
There is parking for one car in the car port and further off-road parking is available in the owners’ driveway.

Both the private courtyard and the large shared garden are gated. A stair gate is provided, and the futon beds in the twin room are safe for toddlers upwards. Beach toys are available.
Local activities in and around Cozes, Charente/Vendee/W. Loire
Liboulas is one mile from Talmont, one of "France's Most Beautiful Villages", with its beautiful Compostella pilgrim church & hollyhock-lined streets. Talmont has several tourist & craft shops, as well as restaurants. On Saturday evenings in high season, you can soak up the atmosphere of the candle-lit streets to do some late shopping.
Closer is Arces, with its boulangerie and well-regarded Franco/Irish restaurant Le Cottage. Local produce is used as far as possible for the modern irish & french dishes which attract the locals and tourists alike, and the music evenings are great fun. The Whitsun flower festival at Arces draws in the crowds, and the fireworks for Bastille Day out-do most British towns ten times the size.
Meschers' little port is lined with fish restaurants - try one for Sunday lunch after shopping at the market. Or you can relax over brunch at Tina's Cafe at Meschers' Plage des Nonnes while your children play on the beach. The sea here is ideal for younger children as it remains shallow at all stages of the tide. Older children will find loads of fun, including dinghy & catamaran sailing, land yachting & adventure activities at St Georges de Didonne, only a short drive further on.
The Gironde estuary provides birdwatchers with very rewarding opportunities at all times of the year. Spring sees the return of the nesting storks, hoopoes, black kites, swallows & nightingales; summer visitors to the marsh near Talmont include bluethroats, stilts, & shrikes. Ospreys pass through on their autumn migration, whilst in winter short-eared owls quarter the marshes between Liboulas & Talmont and the chalk cliffs are a winter home to wallcreepers.
Music plays a large part in the local scene. Le Cottage & Tina's provide popular music, jazz, blues & folk. Le Surf, near Tina's, is for rock & reggae. Classical music lovers will find Jeudis Musicaux more to their taste - classical concerts in atmospheric romanesque churches.

Rental Notes: Rental is Saturday to Saturday in school holiday periods. Outside of these, flexible arrival/departure days may be possible so that you can take advantage of cheaper flights or ferry crossings - please enquire. We may be able to offer a discount of up to 15% on Brittany Ferries. We are able to accept payment in euros or sterling.
