Local activities in and around Waterville, South West
For foodies, the area has some of the best seafood restaurants in Ireland. There are cafes, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs within a 3 miles radius offering a range of food to suit all budgets.
The area is steeped in history and trips to the Skelligs Rocks to see how monks lived in the 12th century are a must. These are bookable locally. Visit the old cable station in Waterville from which ran the first transatlantic telephone cables.
You are ideally situated for touring the Ring of Kerry yet just off the main trail. The Skellig Ring is also a must do and often overlooked. It is much shorter but in our view more spectacular and gives superb views of the Skellig Rocks, Valencia Island and the Blasket Islands. Chocoholics must stop at the very exclusive handmade chocolate factory on the way round and pick up a solid easter egg or some brandy and champagne chocolates.
The area has a superb range of beaches to choose from. Just over the mountain and into Derrynane you will find the home of famous Daniel O'Connell which is nestled next to a beautifull white sand beach. This has been restored into an excellent museum and heritage centre with beautiful garden walks.
Sea fishing is available from the rocks, beaches and boat. Some of the best Sea Trout and Salmon fishing in Europe is available from Lough Currane and rivers the area. My personal best Seatrout is 9lb 6 oz and is mounted in the hall. You can fly fish for Bass and Pollack in the sea at the front of the house.
Waterville now benefits from 2 links Golf course which are considered the best links courses in Ireland. They are frequented by many of the worlds top players including Tiger Woods. The new course is just under a mile along the road.
Bicycle hire and horse riding is available locally.
The area generally is an Artists paradise. For the artists amongst you I would recommend you visit the renowned Cil Reelig Art Centre.
Broadband Internet is provided to enable you to stay in touch.
Waterville Golf Links
Links land is a geographical rarity. Less than one percent of all golf courses in Ireland and the British Isles are championship links. Waterville is one of these blessed places hence it regularly attracts the Worlds top golfers who test their mettle here. Golf at Waterville is a mystical experience - the beauty of classic links land, surrounded by the sea, yet forever changed and by the elements. At over 100 years old it is ranked as one of the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 Links courses in the World. Links Golf combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses, firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all intertwined by the ever changing weather. Forget the lob wedge. Think bump and run creative shot making. Are you ready to are walk in the footsteps of the earliest golfers.
Situated overlooking the magistic Ballinskelligs Bay and set among natural magalithic stonework and indigenous Bog Deal, there can be few places more visually stunning locations for a golf course than Skellig Bay Waterville, The course opened for play in spring 2006 and has already been rated in Ireland's "Top 50". Nestling in the towering McGuillycuddy Reeks the golfer has to negotiate the river Fionnglass for the opening and closing holes but is the stretch from six to sixteen that lives long in the memory long after the last putt has been sunk. Here the awesome beauty of the Bay hits you as you play through holes framed by over 8000 yards of ancient "famine" walls. Original standing stones from pre-christian times and a fairy fort all add to an unforgettable round as you experience an unbelievable feeling of another time another place. "Skellig Bay is full of challenging golf holes", says the the Sunday Independent Golf correspondent Dermot Gilleece.....
Waterville is Game and Sea Anglers paradise. The Lough Currane system includes 5 loughs which offer the best SeaTrout fishing in Europe and usually delivers the biggest Sea Trout in Ireland year on year. My personal best is 9lb 6 ozs taken from Lough Derriana. The biggest Salmon last year was 18 lbs and the biggest Sea Trout 14lb. Boats and/or Ghillies are available details at www.loughcurrane.com. There is also a wealth of other places to fish in the general area for Salmon and Trout such as The Caragh system, The Laune and Killarney's Great Lakes.
For the Shore fishers there are Beaches and Rocks marks to die for. Bass fishing is very good. Catch them from the beach below the bungalow or visit one of the many other surf beaches in the bay such as Waterville, Reenro, Derrynane. The rocks towards hogs head regularly produce specimen Wrasse and Pollack as well as conger eels and Mackerel. These are just a walk away. Superb Deep Sea fishing is available for parties or individuals.
Derrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell Lawyer, politician and statesman. Nestled in the a beautiful Derrynane Bay on 120 Hectares of parklands on the scenic Kerry coast, the house displays many relics of O'Connells life and career. Access for visitors with disabilities to ground floor. The gardens are particularly spectacular and lead down to a wonderful Blue Flag Beach. The plantingis sub-tropical due to the mild climate created by the Gulf Stream. Approx 5 miles from the bungalow off the N70 Ring of Kerry
Experience the many aspects of the offshore Skellig Islands while remaining on dry land by visiting the Skellig Expereince Centre, a custom built, stone clad, Grass Roofed, prize winning building located right on the waterfront beside the Valentia Island Bridge at Portmagee. Here, through re-creations and models you can study the lives of the Skellig Monks of the early christian period, their activities, their endurance and their dedication in gaining a foothold on a tiny, inhospitable, offshore island and creating a community there that survived 600 years. In the 80 seat auditorium you can follow the footsteps of those skellig monks, and wonder at the legacy of Architecture they left behind. Here to, in the Skellig Experience's recreated sea cliff, with life size models and related presentations, you can get to know, by sight and sound the life and the times of the Skelligs Monks

" - The house was fantastic and the views spectacular, even better than we expected. Our family had a wonderful break. We went horse riding and walking and I played golf at both courses. We are looking forward to next year. Thankyou for all your help " - The Jones Family - London - UK
"Many thanks for the use of the house, it was superb, what a location, you are very lucky. We left two body boards in the garage for future users as the boarding on the beach to the left of the house was great " - The Ovenden's - Northants, UK
"We loved your house and had a great week. Derrynane Beach was exceptionally beautiful. We took the drive round the Skellig Ring as you suggested in your book and it was a highlight of our trip, ate Dinner at Q.C.s', amazingly delicious 22/07/06" - The Colton Family - Brookline USA
"This place is modern, clean and beautifully finished with proper heating, first class cooking facilities and wonderful fixtures and fittings. Its superb for the views, walks, beach fishing sight seeing, etc. Amazed to see hares in the garden and dolphins in the bay. We stayed in 2007 and visited again in 2008. The accommodation was faultless, unlike the weather, which failed to deliver the migrating fish this week but it did deliver the following week. Moral of this story - take 2 week stay here" - Emil Morfett
"Lovely comfortable "has it all" house. Surpassed all our expectations & then some. Nice to see an owner taking the trouble to cover all possible needs. The views well... what can we say words... just don't do it justice. Expect another booking " - John Harris - Australia
"Loher Beach House far exceeded our expectations as the house and location are wonderful - idylic with breathaking views over the bay yet only a short drive or cycle from the lovely town of Waterville. It is finished to a very high and luxurious standard with everything you need for your stay. Lots to see and do which means there is something for everyone. A credit to the owners who are very easy to deal with and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay. Recommended for all
