We were looking for a base to tour the Castles in the area and we found it in Curlew Cottage. This gorgeously furnished cottage has been great to stay at, we felt at home as soon as we stepped across the threshold. " - Rebecca and Helga Stuttgart Germany.

The cottage is set in the picturesque fishing village of Johnshaven on the East coast of Scotland, between Aberdeen and Dundee. Stonehaven, with its famous Dunnottar Castle is the closest small town. The comfortable cottage has recently been refurbished to a high standard and provides an ideal base for relaxing and also exploring the coast and nearby Royal Deeside. A two minute walk takes you down to the beach where you can follow the coastal path(and possibly spot Dolphins) north to Gourdon, 3 mls, or south to St Cyrus 4 mls. bird watching visitors enthuse about the Puffins at nearby Fowlsheugh. Bird Sanctuary at nearby Montrose Basin.

The cottage consists of lounge, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor. There is also a small courtyard area to the side of the cottage.
Upstairs are two double bedrooms and bathroom. The cottage can sleep 5 and a baby as a folding single bed and a travel cot are available. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker, fridge freezer, washer dryer and microwave.
A door from the kitchen leads to the small walled courtyard area which has clothes drying facilities and outdoors table and chairs. A covered area provides shelter for wet coats, muddy boots and bicycles.
The comfortable lounge has an electric radiant and convector fire, providing instant cosiness, this is complemented by electric central heating. The original beamed ceiling helps retain the old world charm of the cottage which has been sympathetically refurbished to provide a relaxing base for your holiday. The lounge also has T.V.,D.V.D., video and music system.
The dining room allows for comfortable family meals. This room can also be used to play table games and cards. Games, jigsaws and books are provided. Maps are also provided and we have marked all the places of interest to visit both locally and further afield. There are several folders containing brochures of places of interest, information on walking, bird watching, fishing, golf, horse riding etc. We have also gathered menus and listed many places to eat within 15 miles of Johnshaven.

Local activities in and around Stonehaven, Highlands & Islands
There are many places of interest to visit, including the Grassic Gibbon Centre at nearby Arbuthnott, a Heritage Steam Railway near the beautiful 18th Century House of Dun, designed by Scottish architect William Adam. Both are near Montrose, overlooking the Montrose Basin, a must for bird watchers.
Head further south to Arbroath the largest town in Angus and try the famous 'Arbroath Smokies' at one of the tiny smokehouses near the harbour.
For those who want to enjoy some walking in the beautiful surrounding countryside, take the road to the Glens, starting at Kirriemuir where you can visit the birthplace of J.M. Barrie author of Peter Pan whos statue can be found in the town centre.
There are many good golf courses in the area and many fine links courses along the coast, stretching from St Andrews to Stonehaven.
Royal Deeside is a must. Spend a day exploring Braemar, Ballater and Crathes Castle. Maybe catch a glimpse of the Royals on holiday!
There are brochures in the cottage describing all of the above as well as The Coastal trail, The Castle Trail, The Heritage Trail, The Whisky Trail and many others.
Visitors to the cottage have left many pleasing comments and all say 'a week is not long enough, we have to come back!'
