Local activities in and around Fort William, Highlands & Islands
The Western Highlands are renowned for their magnificent mountains, remote glens and spectacular lochs. Glennfinnan is at the heart of the western highlands and gives good access to many attractions. Outdoor enthusiasts will find almost every sport possible in this area with great hill and mountain walks, sailing on the loch, skiing at Aeonach Mor and both cross country mountain biking and downhill biking. In fact in 2007 the World Cup Downhill championship is to be hosted here.
Historically the area is fascinating with Glenfinnan being closely associated with Bonnie Prince Charlie. South and west of this glen takes you through Glenuig and down to the Ardnamurchan peninsula. This is a remote and stunningly beautiful peninsula with the one of the finest beaches in Scotland at Sanna.
Head out west to Arisaig and spend a day sailing around the Inner Hebridean islands with the evocative names of Rhum, Muck and Eigg on either the private boat The Shearwater or on Caledonian MacBrayne's Ferry from Mallaig. With luck you will see whales, dolphins and seals and The Shearwater will spend time following these beautiful creatures in order for passengers to see them closely.
North of Glenfinnan is the Great Glen in which lies Scotland's deepest loch - Loch Ness. At the head of the loch is Inverness - the capital of the Highlands. This attractive, non industrial city with its lovely central river and castle offers everthing from international cuisine to a large Aquadome leisure pool.
South of Fort William is the famous Glencoe both beautiful and awesome in its peaks and glens. Oban further south is a lively ferry port town.
Fort William Downhill Mountain Biking Course
The World Championship Downhill Mountain Biking Event is being held in Fort William. The School House is only 20 minutes from this event.
