Once a major defensive port, Honfleur has blossomed into one of Normandy’s most appealing harbours. It is a town which is home to many painters and there are regular exhibitions in the salt warehouses. William the Conqueror built most of Caen, much of which remains despite wartime bombing. The old quarter still has many half-timbered buildings. Definitely try the fiery warming Calvados apple-brandy made here. Bayeux Cathedral is home to the tapestry which charts William’s invasion, giving a fascinating amount of detail of 11th century life.
Many gites, holiday cottages and self-catering rentals are available in this area for you to rent throughout the year.
