Located in central Europe, Switzerland is bordered by France, Germany, Italy, Austria and the tiny principality of Liechtenstein. Its name conjures up images of chocolates, cheese, watches, bankers and snow-capped mountains.
Switzerland can be divided into four parts, all with their own character and identity. The Swiss speak French, German, Italian and Romansch, a Romance language descended from Vulgar Latin, which somewhat resembles Italian and French. These divisions make for a diverse country, which is hugely enjoyable and rewarding to explore. Holiday accommodation could also be variable with holiday villas in the valleys, holiday chalets in the mountains or apartments near the ski centres. Switzerland is Nature’s playground and offers numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. The Swiss Alps and the Jura slopes are great places for skiing. Hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, hang-gliding are all possible. Water skiing, sailing, rafting and canoeing are also available. Its capital is Bern and the locals have held onto their Swiss Franc. Zurich is a more picturesque city and the largest in the country and is Switzerland’s main commercial centre. Geneva stands at the end of its own lake and some of it strays into France.
