| With more than a little bit of Spanish influence and with many residents speaking Catalan, this southerly corner is an intriguing mixture of cultures. A region that can be divided into four different terrains, each offering visitors a different perspective. The 220km of rugged wild coast is softened by 180km of fine sandy beaches and coastal backwaters. There is the vast coastal plain stretching from the Rhone to the Pyrénées where tourism flourishes in the main centres of Perpignan, Narbonne, Beziers and Montpelier. Inland is more hilly and given over much to wine-production. Here can be found the pick of holiday gites, farmhouses and villas. Further still are the mountainous regions of the Massif Central in the north and the Pyrénées in the south with its high summits and winter ski- stations very popular with the snowboarding fraternity. Holiday apartments are readily available within easy reach of the sea and some offer the chance for horse riding, golfing or fishing. |
